    Job description

    About Upstart
At Upstart, we're united by a mission that matters: to radically reduce the cost and complexity of borrowing for all Americans. Every day, we bring creativity, experimentation, and advanced AI to reshape access to credit, helping millions move forward financially with clarity and confidence.
As the leading AI lending marketplace, we partner with banks and credit unions to expand access to affordable credit through technology that's both radically intelligent and deeply human. Our platform runs over one million predictions per borrower using more than 1,800 signals, powering smarter, fairer decisions for millions of customers. But the numbers only hint at the impact. Every idea, every voice, and every contribution moves us closer to a world where credit never stands between people and their financial progress.
We're proudly digital-first, giving most Upstarters the flexibility to do their best work from wherever they thrive, alongside teammates across 80+ cities in the US and Canada. Digital-first doesn't mean distant. We're intentional about in-person connection through team onsites, planning sessions, and moments that spark creativity and trust. And whether you choose to work primarily from home or collaborate in-person from one of our offices in Columbus, Austin, the Bay Area, or New York City (opening Summer 2026), you'll have the support to work in the way that works best for you.
If you're energized by tackling meaningful problems, excited to innovate with purpose, and motivated by work that truly matters, we'd love to hear from you.
    The Team:
Upstart's Cash Line team is building and scaling Upstart's first in-house revolving line of credit product. The team is focused on evolving a successful MVP into a scalable, long-term platform that supports Upstart's broader ecosystem strategy and future consumer lending experiences.
As the Senior Engineering Manager, Cash Line at Upstart, you will lead the day-to-day operations of a high-performing engineering team responsible for delivering complex product and platform enhancements. You'll partner closely with Product, Design, and senior leadership to establish execution systems, improve delivery predictability, and help scale a product that is already demonstrating strong market traction.
    How you'll make an impact
    • Lead and develop a team of approximately 10 engineers focused on scaling Upstart's Cash Line product and platform capabilities
    • Establish execution frameworks, operating rhythms, and prioritization systems that improve delivery quality and predictability across the team
    • Partner closely with Product and Design leaders to execute against a complex roadmap spanning monetization, user retention, credit expansion, and platform scalability
    • Drive cross-functional alignment across engineering, product, design, and leadership stakeholders to deliver high-impact customer experiences
    • Support the team through the transition from MVP to scaled product by balancing structure with team autonomy and ownership
    • Guide technical and organizational decision-making across multiple concurrent roadmap initiatives with competing business and engineering trade-offs
    • Foster an inclusive, collaborative engineering culture focused on growth, accountability, and continuous improvement
    • Help shape the future growth of the Cash Line organization as the business and engineering scope expands over time

    Minimum Qualifications
    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Mathematics, or a related field (or its equivalent) + 8 years of experience, including at least 3 years of direct people management experience
    • Experience managing and developing software engineering teams responsible for delivering customer-facing products or platforms
    • Experience establishing execution frameworks, operating models, or delivery processes within fast-paced or ambiguous engineering environments
    • Experience partnering cross-functionally with Product and Design teams to deliver complex technical initiatives
    • Experience prioritizing and delivering across multiple concurrent engineering initiatives with measurable business impact

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Knowledge of consumer financial products, fintech platforms, or lending systems
    • Ability to evaluate engineering impact using customer, product, and business outcomes in addition to delivery metrics
    • Experience leading engineering teams through periods of rapid product growth or organizational scaling
    • Skills in balancing technical execution with cross-functional stakeholder management and team development
    • Experience with mobile product development or customer-facing application experiences
