    Job description

    About the team

Roku pioneered streaming to the TV and continues to innovate and lead the industry. As we strive to influence the future of television globally, including TV advertising, the ongoing success depends heavily on our investment in the Content Management System. With Roku providing millions of movies, episodes, news, and channels, the Content Management System plays a vital role in managing content ingestion, selection, enrichment, and curation. We are seeking engineers capable of developing, designing, and deploying highly scalable, reliable applications, tools, and automation frameworks to efficiently handle the vast volume of content in our pipeline.

    About the role

As a Senior Software Engineer on Roku's streaming applications team, you will be a key contributor responsible for architecting, designing, and building high-impact streaming experiences across multiple connected TV platforms. You will drive technical excellence by leading architectural decisions and setting the strategic direction for frontend development across platforms, including Google/Android TV, Fire TV, and Samsung. This role requires close collaboration with product, UX, and engineering teams to define scope, make product decisions, and influence cross-team alignment. You will champion innovation and AI-assisted engineering practices to accelerate development and elevate code quality. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in modern web frameworks, media playback technologies, and consumer application development at scale. This is an opportunity to shape the future of how millions of viewers discover and enjoy streaming content on the biggest screen in their home.

How will I use AI at Roku?

At Roku, we don't just use AI, we work with it. AI agents and smart tools help power drafts, analysis, and repetitive workflows, while our people bring direction, judgment, and accountability. We're looking for curious, adaptable builders who can show how they've used AI or automation to move faster, raise the bar, and scale their impact.

We value your AI skills if you have built fluency across the agentic engineering toolchain - coding harnesses like Claude Code or Cursor, MCP servers, custom skills, or agent frameworks. And you can describe projects where you shipped real work with these tools. You know how to drive an agent, verify its output, and ramp on an unfamiliar codebase with an agent helping you.

For California Only - The estimated annual salary for this position is between $246,500 - $486,100 annually.  Compensation packages are based on factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, certifications, and specific geographical location.  This role is eligible for health insurance, equity awards, life insurance, disability benefits, parental leave, wellness benefits, and paid time off.

    What you'll be doing
    • Architect, design, and build engaging streaming TV experiences for Roku's large and growing user base across multiple connected TV platforms
    • Define and lead architectural decisions to deliver high-quality, high-performance applications on platforms including Google/Android TV, Fire TV, and Samsung
    • Set the strategic and tactical direction for frontend development and connected TV applications, lead architecture reviews, guide design decisions, and ensure adherence to best practices
    • Drive innovation with a relentless focus on increasing user satisfaction and improving the reliability, stability, security, and quality of streaming applications
    • Collaborate with product, UX, and engineering teams to define scope, make product decisions, and provide thought leadership across the organization
    • Leverage and champion AI-assisted engineering tools and practices to increase team productivity, code quality, and automated testing
    • Contribute to a culture of engineering and operational excellence across the team
    We're excited if you have
    • Strong understanding of UX/UI design principles with proficiency in modern web frameworks (React/Redux, Solid JS, Flutter, Cordova) and expert-level programming skills in JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, and CSS
    • Proven track record in architecting, building, and shipping engaging consumer applications at scale
    • Experience with media frameworks and streaming protocols, including HLS and MPEG-DASH, DRM, and media playback on HTML5, iOS, and Android platforms; familiarity with MSE/EME, ExoPlayer, Shaka Player, or Dash.js
    • Experience in connected TV environments with an understanding of the unique technical constraints and requirements of this space
    • Demonstrated fluency with generative AI and experience actively using AI-assisted engineering tools to accelerate product development
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders, teams, and senior leaders across the organization
    • Ability to operate at both hands-on technical depth and strategic leadership levels
    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field (Master's degree preferred) and 15+ years of industry experience in senior software engineering roles
