Job description

Position Summary

The Director of Technology Engineering & Architecture is responsible for leading JetBlue's software engineering, architecture, and agile delivery capabilities. This leader owns software development across a portfolio of custom-built and integrated technology solutions that enable JetBlue's Commercial, Operations, and Enterprise functions.

The Director is a credible technologist who stays close to modern engineering practices, cloud-native application development, and agile delivery. They lead with clarity and accountability, building high-performing teams that deliver quality software reliably. They are equally comfortable engaging senior business leaders as they are guiding engineering and architectural decisions with technical teams. Essential Responsibilities

  • Lead the software engineering, architecture, and agile delivery teams
  • Drive the development, delivery, and support of technology solutions that enable JetBlue's business strategy, continuously improving the crewmember and customer experience
  • Shape and execute the long-term strategy for JetBlue's application portfolio and architecture
  • Own and enforce engineering standards, development practices, and architectural patterns across JetBlue's integrated technology portfolio
  • Ensure applications are built and maintained to the highest standards of security, availability, and reliability, reflecting the 24/7 operational demands of an airline
  • Collaborate with Product, Infrastructure, Data, QA, and Cybersecurity teams to ensure alignment on priorities, dependencies, and delivery outcomes
  • Guide application strategy, balancing build, buy, and integrate decisions against business objectives
  • Oversee a portfolio of concurrent projects - understanding scope, resource constraints, and business impact to prioritize and execute work effectively
  • Lead Agile Delivery capabilities that enable effective planning, execution, dependency management, and continuous improvement across teams
  • Leverage external partners strategically to augment team capacity and accelerate delivery
  • Empower, inspire, and develop crewleaders and crewmembers through coaching, goal setting, and creating a culture of accountability and growth
  • Build a strong, diverse team with a pipeline of successors across all disciplines
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field, OR demonstrated capability to perform job responsibilities with a High School Diploma/GED and at least four (4) years of relevant experience
  • Ten (10) years of leadership experience in application development or software engineering
  • Demonstrated experience delivering applications built on cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP), including deep understanding of how architecture, environments, and deployment pipelines underpin application delivery
  • Fluency in agile delivery and DevOps practices
  • Experience managing a hybrid portfolio of SaaS, custom-built, and third-party integrated applications, including build-vs-buy evaluation and vendor performance management
  • Familiarity with emerging AI capabilities and the ability to apply them to improve effectiveness and scale impact
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to translate complex technical topics for non-technical audiences and demonstrate a clear understanding of the business
  • Proven ability to build relationships and influence across organizational lines, including with senior business leaders
  • Track record of managing large-scale, concurrent projects and driving change effectively in environments with shifting priorities
  • Ability to manage and communicate through competing priorities across a large, complex technology portfolio without losing delivery momentum
  • Available for occasional overnight travel (20%)
  • In possession of valid travel documents with the ability to travel in and out of the United States
  • Able to pass a pre-employment drug test
  • Legally eligible to work in the country in which the position is located

Preferred Experience and Qualifications

  • Experience in the airline or travel industry
  • Experience working in a scaled agile environment (SAFe or equivalent) across multiple teams

Crewmember Expectations:

  • Regular attendance and punctuality
  • Potential need to work flexible hours and be available to respond on short notice
  • Able to maintain a professional appearance
  • When working or traveling on JetBlue flights, and if time permits, all capable crewmembers are asked to assist with light cleaning of the aircraft
  • Must be an appropriate organizational fit for the JetBlue culture, that is, exhibit the JetBlue values of Safety, Caring, Integrity, Passion and Fun
  • Must fulfill safety accountabilities as prescribed by JetBlue's Safety Management System
  • Promote JetBlue's #1 value of safety as a Safety Ambassador, supporting JetBlue's Safety Management System (SMS) components, Safety Policy and behavioral standards
  • Identify safety and/or security concerns, issues, incidents or hazards that should be reported and report them whenever possible and by any means necessary including JetBlue's confidential reporting systems (Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) or Safety Action Report (SAR))
  • Responsible for adhering to all applicable laws, regulations (FAA, OSHA, DOT, etc.) and Company policies, procedures and risk controls
  • Uphold JetBlue's safety performance metric goals and understand how they relate to their duties and responsibilities
  • The use of ChatGPT or any other automated tool during the interview process will disqualify a candidate from being considered for the position

Compensation:

  • The base pay range for this position is between $195,000.00 and $335,000.00 per year. Base pay is one component of JetBlue's total compensation package, which may also include performance bonuses, restricted stock units, as well as access to healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan and company match, crewmember stock purchase plan, short-term and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance, free space available travel on JetBlue, and more.
