Job description

As a member of Garverโ€™s growing Water Design Center, the Structural Engineer will be responsible for assisting in the development of Structural Designs in support of various Water Business Line projects. Generally, this responsibility will include structural support as required for a variety of water and wastewater projects, but the majority of the expected assignments will be related to developing structural designs for new water and wastewater treatments plants or improvements to existing water and wastewater treatment facilities.
The Structural Engineer must have a strong knowledge base of engineering principals including concrete, steel, and masonry design. Knowledge of the provisions of the International Building Code and its referenced material Codes is preferred. Candidates must have strong technical problem solving and critical thinking skills, be self motivated, enjoy team-oriented work, and have good oral and written communications. Candidates must have a basic understanding of the multi-discipline practices (i.e. process, surveying, geotechnical, structural, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation amp; control) required for the implementation of infrastructure capital improvements. Candidates must have strong communications skills as required to assist project teams and maintain internal client relationships. Candidates must be proficient with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, and Outlook. Experience with AutoCad, Revit, or Microstation is preferred. Candidates must also have a basic knowledge of finite element modeling using plates and frame elements.
Qualified candidates must have the following capabilities and the ability to perform the following routine functions:
  • Be technically competent in aspects of structural engineering.
  • Work with a team of multi-disciplined (civil, process, structural, mechanical, electrical, and I amp;C) project engineers, design engineers, and BIM Technicians in the development of construction plans and specifications for water and wastewater treatment plant projects.
  • Work on multiple projects concurrently.
  • Assist in the development of project budgets including the development of detailed project instructions, scope of work, level of effort, and associated man-hour estimates.
  • Be responsible for time management and work product quality.
  • Keep accurate and up-to-date project accounting on all assigned projects.
  • Conduct written and oral project reporting for clients and team leader. Reporting will include project design status, upcoming milestones, project accounting, percent completes, progress reports, etc.
  • Assist in the preparation and execution of Quality Assurance and Quality Control Plans for water and wastewater treatment projects.
  • Assist with internal and external project workshops.
  • Be responsible for continuing education and learning based on project needs, as well as overall needs of the team.

Some travel may be required, as projects may require field work for site assessment of project locations and support during construction.
Water Design Center (WDC)
Staffed with multi-disciplined engineers, scientists, designers, and technicians, the WDC provides high-performance teams for technical expertise in all project areas to successfully deliver sound solutions and customized quality designs. The WDC was created to bring together every unique discipline necessary to design custom solutions for water and wastewater treatment facilities and related infrastructure, including civil, environmental, process, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, controls, construction, applications, and operations. Having a focused team with in-person collaboration using the latest 3D and 4D BIM software leads to more efficient delivery, shorter design schedules, and lower change order percentages.
Requirements:
  • Bachelorโ€™s Degree in civil or structural engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • 5-10 years of technical experience in structural design engineering
  • Basic understanding of structural engineering design in concrete, masonry, and structural steel
  • PE or ability to obtain a PE registration with 2 years
Preferred Skills:
  • Masterโ€™s Degree in civil or structural engineering
  • Registration as a PE or be willing to take the NCEES Professional Engineer exam within 2 years
  • Working knowledge of Revit CAD programs
  • Structural complexities associated with water and wastewater treatment equipment
  • Working with a multi-disciplinary team comprised of process, structural, building mechanical, electrical, and Instrumentation and control disciplines.
  • Active participation in local professional organizations.
