This position can be filled by a Relay Apprentice 1st Year through 4th Year.
Relay Apprentices are responsible for start-up testing and maintenance activities associated with substation and system protection equipment.
This position is designated as a Safety Sensitive position and is subject to mandatory pre-employment and random drug testing.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform routine and emergency maintenance and repairs on all types of substation protective relay systems, control equipment, and communications equipment
- Installs, commissions and tests substation protective relays, digital and analog telemetering, power-line carrier transmitters/receivers, wave-traps and carrier tuning equipment, transfer trip carrier and tone equipment, transducers, digital fault recorders, sequence of events recorders, substation PLCs and CPUs, remote terminal units, transformers, breakers, and substation communications circuits from the demark point to all internal substation equipment
- Commissions, maintains and tests current transformers, coupling capacitors, fiber optic cable to high voltage equipment and substation control cable in substations
- End-to-end relay testing using Doble ProTest software or Protection Suite
- Prepares and maintains records of equipment tests and maintenance records
- Makes special tests as directed in connection with operation, maintenance and design of all types of electrical equipment and systems associated with substations and system protection
- Switch and ground substation equipment in accordance with Entergy’s Switching Procedures, Grounding Procedures, Safe Work Procedures and Safety Rules
- Trains, coaches, and mentors fellow employees in related activities
- Responds to emergency conditions and troubleshoots and repairs problems
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Education:
- Associate degree in Electrical/Electronics, or Military equivalent or equivalent work experience
Minimum Experience:
- 0 - 4 years of experience
- Preferred: Prior electrical substation relaying experience
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Basic knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code (NESC), National Electric Code (NEC), and NERC protective relay standards
- Knowledge of electric utility systems operation, maintenance and construction practices
- Demonstrated aptitude to work alone in unsupervised situations
- Demonstrated computer skills, Windows, Excel, Access and Word
- Ability to work effectively in a culturally diverse work group
- Ability to read and understand electrical one-line diagrams, schematics and wiring diagrams, technical manuals and instruction books
- Computer competency required
- Must work safely at all times
- Must be dependable and reliable, and work as member of a team
- Must have good interpersonal skills
- Must be self-motivated with ability to make decisions
- Must be available for 24-hour callout and available to work overtime hours to maintain continuity of service as emergencies require
- Preferred:
- Knowledge of protective relaying, SCADA, communications, and substation equipment
- Familiarity with Schweitzer, ERLphase and Electromechanical relays (Westinghouse and GE)
- Knowledge of Doble ProTest or Protection Suite
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills together with proven commitment to safety and customer service
- Prior experience installing, maintaining, testing, & repairing circuit breakers, transformers, switchgear, and similar equipment
Any Certification, Licenses, Testing, etc.:
- Must have or be able to obtain, and maintain a valid driver’s license; valid driver's license and good driving record
- Must have or be able to obtain a TWIC card
- Must be EEI TECH Test Recommended
