American Express Global Payment Network authorizes and processes all of the company's customer card transactions. It is the critical back bone for this processing and operates in a near real-time, low-latency system that is always available and highly resilient, processing transactions from around the world 24x7, 365 days a year.

The Global Merchant and Network Services Technology (GMNST) organization at American Express is responsible for modernizing the payments network to enable next-generation payments products. The team creates flexible merchant platforms to acquire, bill, pay, service and foster innovation, while enabling a payments ecosystem to connect and authenticate parties seamlessly and securely

As a Senior Engineer, you will be a hands-on engineer building highly available and scalable distributed system on the cloud that contribute and drive our Global Card Network platform. Your primary responsibility is to design and develop capabilities for our next generation distributed transaction platform, supporting Amex card transactions while leading a team of engineers in Agile teams.  You will work closely with other Senior Engineers, Product Owners and architects to achieve your goals.

The below represents the expected salary range for this job requisition. Ultimately, in determining your pay, we'll consider your location, experience, and other job-related factors.
  • Computer Science / Information Systems degree, or equivalent with min 12+ years of professional work experience.
  • Strong implementation experience using object-oriented languages like C/C++, Java or Go (Java Preferred). Keen understanding of how to build highly performant systems with such languages.
  • Strong coding skills and fundamentals with hands on experience in building distributed micro-service systems, experience with Service Mesh products/frameworks like such as Envoy, Linkerd, Istio, gRPC/ProtoBuf; Business Rule Management experience with tools such as Drools. Experience developing and maintaining distributed, elastic micro-service applications that self-heal in the event of failures.
  • Distributed System Management/tracing and monitoring such as Zipkin/Jaeger, ELK Stack, Grafana Prometheus.
  • Have experience in designing and building Cloud native applications. Experience in cloud platforms like Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift are a plus.
  • Experience in using NoSQL databases and distributed messaging systems such as Redis, Kafka, Couchbase, Cassandra in the context of low latency and high transaction volume systems.
  • Experience in building Restful APIs, with Event Driven and Reactive programming.
  • Have hands-on experience in building and delivering large scale enterprise systems/products. Implemented critical aspects of such systems and have supported them in production environment.
  • Keen awareness of concerns in massively distributed systems and effective solutions.
  • Experience working in DevOps teams and Scrums.
  • Hands on experience using Jenkins, Git, Stash.  Previous Continuous Integration (CICD) experience is a plus.
  • Ability to learn and deep dive into new technology and business domains, question status quo and think outside of the box.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communications skills. Create and deliver effective presentations to Senior Leadership.
  • Depending on factors such as business unit requirements, the nature of the position, cost and applicable laws, American Express may provide visa sponsorship for certain positions.
  • Function as a leader on an agile team by contributing to software builds through consistent development practices. Lead code reviews and automated testing.
  • Contribute to high level design as well as detailed design of complex subsystems with emphasis in high availability and low latency.
  • Perform technical aspects of software development for assigned applications including design, developing prototypes, and coding assignments.
  • Debug software components and identify code defects for remediation.
  • You will constantly pursue and learn industry leading/innovative technologies and solutions and build POC's to experiment new technologies, databases and other application infrastructure. Be acutely aware of enabling technologies and open-source products to build low latency distributed systems.
  • Takes accountability for the success of the team achieving their goals, contribute to enable them to be more effective, productive, and demonstrating faster and stronger results.
  • Drives the team's strategy and prioritizes initiatives.
