    Job description

    As a Software Engineer (E1), you will join a team building platforms, services, and developer capabilities that simplify how applications are developed and operated at scale.

    Some of the engineering challenges the team works on include:

    • Defining and improving the developer experience for the next generation of American Express applications.
    • Building automation to provision infrastructure and deploy software across hundreds of applications.
    • Developing and operating highly available global services with compute and data distributed across geographically diverse environments.
    • Building cloud-native platforms and services that are secure, reliable, scalable, and extensible.
    • Improving automation, deployment, observability, and operational capabilities across our technology ecosystem.

    Our technology environment includes Go, Java, Kotlin, TypeScript, JavaScript, and Python; React for browser-based applications; GitHub Enterprise and GitHub Actions for source control and CI/CD; and Kubernetes-managed containers running across private and public cloud environments.

    Additional technologies used across our ecosystem include GraphQL, gRPC, Kafka, Postgres, Couchbase, Cassandra, Elasticsearch, Redis, OpenTracing, Jaeger, Prometheus, and Grafana.

    The below represents the expected salary range for this job requisition. Ultimately, in determining your pay, we'll consider your location, experience, and other job-related factors.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience.
    • Experience designing, developing, and supporting production software applications or services.
    • Hands-on development experience with Java and/or Go.
    • Experience developing cloud-native applications and distributed systems.
    • Experience with DevOps practices, such as building CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure automation, or configuring cloud-hosted environments.
    • Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
    • Working knowledge of Git-based software development and modern software engineering practices.
    • Understanding of software design principles, automated testing, security, reliability, and operational best practices.
    • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound technical decisions in collaboration with other engineers.
    • Strong communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to give and receive constructive feedback and work effectively across teams.
    • Experience supporting or mentoring junior engineers.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience with technologies such as Kotlin, TypeScript, Python, or JavaScript.
    • Experience with public or private cloud platforms and cloud infrastructure.
    • Experience with GitHub Enterprise and GitHub Actions.
    • Experience building or operating Kubernetes-based platforms.
    • Familiarity with distributed systems technologies such as Kafka, gRPC, GraphQL, Postgres, Couchbase, Cassandra, Elasticsearch, or Redis.
    • Experience with observability and monitoring technologies such as OpenTracing, Jaeger, Prometheus, or Grafana.
    • Experience building developer platforms, infrastructure automation, or internal developer tooling.
