Job description
Worley is a global company of energy, chemicals and resources experts headquartered in Australia. We partner with our customers to deliver projects and create value across the life of their assets. We specialize in consulting, engineering, procurement and construction across the project lifecycle, with services extending through to operations and decommissioning. Leveraging extensive experience and AI-enabled delivery, we support customers in navigating complexity as they meet today's needs and transition to more sustainable solutions.
The Role
Worley is seeking a Senior Instrument Engineer (contract) to support EPC project delivery. In this role, you will be responsible for the development, review, and management of instrumentation engineering deliverables, while providing technical leadership across all phases of the project lifecycle. You will support procurement activities, participate in supplier and equipment evaluations, and work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to ensure quality, compliance, and successful project outcomes in a highly regulated environment.
Due to project and facility access requirements, this position requires U.S. citizenship. Candidates must be able to provide proof of U.S. citizenship.
What you'll do
The Senior Instrumentation Engineer will perform instrumentation engineering activities in support of EPC design, procurement, and project execution.
This role requires coordination with process, controls, electrical, mechanical, piping, procurement, supplier, project, quality, and client teams to resolve technical issues and deliver complete design packages.
Responsibilities
- Review process data, P&IDs, equipment information, facility design criteria, safety-significant functional requirements where applicable, and project specifications to establish instrument requirements.
- Prepare instrument data sheets, indexes, loop sheets, I/O lists, wiring and termination documents, cable schedules, installation details, and related design package documentation.
- Develop specifications and requisition technical content for field instruments, analyzers, valves, panels, junction boxes, calibration equipment, and related materials.
- Evaluate supplier quotations, technical deviations, vendor drawings, and supplier data for compliance with project requirements.
- Coordinate instrument interfaces with PLC, DCS, SIS, analyzers, packaged equipment, data acquisition systems, control panels, electrical power supplies, grounding, networks, and facility monitoring systems.
- Support safety-related, safety-significant, and non-safety instrumentation decisions with appropriate independence, traceability, and documentation.
- Check instrument deliverables prepared by others for accuracy, completeness, specification compliance, constructability, and alignment with project procedures.
- Support procurement activities by preparing technical content, responding to supplier questions, evaluating exceptions, documenting bid evaluation results, and resolving supplier comments while maintaining safety, quality, and project requirements.
- The Senior Instrument Engineer will also promote quality and consistency by:
- Communicating project requirements, quality expectations, checking procedures, deliverables, and schedule priorities to engineering and design team members.
- Reviewing deliverables for technical quality, constructability, and readiness for client, procurement, or construction issue.
- Supporting consistent use of project procedures, nuclear quality expectations, document control practices, templates, and checking practices.
- The ideal candidate can reconcile discrepancies between process data, P&IDs, instrument data, control system interfaces, supplier information, company requirements, customer specifications, and nuclear fuel facility design requirements.
- Candidates should have practical knowledge of EPC execution, instrumentation standards, regulated facility documentation, procurement practices, and the technical rigor required for nuclear fuel manufacturing or similarly regulated industrial facilities.
- This position requires strong attention to detail, sound engineering judgment, ownership of assigned work, and the ability to provide technical guidance while following project procedures and quality requirements.
What you'll bring
Technical and Industry Experience
- Demonstrated ability to deliver accurate, high-quality instrument engineering work in a multi-disciplinary EPC project environment.
- Strong knowledge of instrument engineering fundamentals, including process data interpretation, instrument selection, data sheets, indexes, wiring and termination documents, loop diagrams, requisition support, technical bid evaluation, and checking of work prepared by others.
- Experience applying pressure, temperature, flow, level, analytical, radiation monitoring, gas detection, valve, and specialty instrumentation in regulated process facilities.
- Ability to interpret and apply P&IDs, process basis information, cause-and-effect requirements, control narratives, safety function descriptions, alarm and setpoint requirements, hazardous area classifications, equipment layouts, and vendor package information.
- Experience coordinating instrument interfaces with PLC, DCS, SIS, HMI, SCADA, data acquisition, industrial communications, cybersecurity considerations, and packaged equipment control systems.
- Experience supporting nuclear, nuclear fuel cycle, DOE, pharmaceutical, specialty chemical, semiconductor, or other highly regulated manufacturing facilities is strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of applicable instrumentation and control standards and practices, including ISA standards, IEC practices, NEC requirements, NFPA 70E awareness, hazardous area requirements, instrument installation practices, calibration concepts, setpoint documentation, and nuclear quality documentation expectations.
- Experience using instrument engineering tools and databases to maintain data sheets, indexes, requisition documentation, and supplier quotation evaluations.
- Proficiency with relevant software, including MS Office Suite.
- Significant senior instrument engineering experience on EPC, EPCM, nuclear, nuclear fuel cycle, chemical, specialty manufacturing, energy, or similarly complex multi-disciplinary projects.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical requirements, design decisions, schedule impacts, and action items to engineering disciplines, procurement, project management, construction, quality, clients, and suppliers.
- Ability to coordinate with procurement, suppliers, and vendors by communicating technical requirements, resolving deviations and clarifications, documenting decisions, and supporting timely supplier data review.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with engineering and design teams in other offices, time zones, and regions.
- Proactive, organized, and accountable work style, with the ability to identify interface gaps, raise concerns early, and drive open technical items to closure.
Education - Qualifications, Accreditation, Training
Required:
- A recognized and relevant engineering degree
