Job description

Title: Estimator

Location: Markham or Ottawa

Company: Heather and Little

Role Overview

The Estimator supports project acquisition and successful delivery by preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates with a strong focus on architectural sheet metal and heritage restoration projects. This role involves reviewing drawings, specifications, and existing site conditions-often on historically significant buildings-to determine labour, material, and equipment requirements specific to traditional materials and specialized installation methods. The Estimator must understand the complexities of working with copper, lead, zinc, and other heritage materials, along with the constraints of restoration work where access, preservation standards, and unknown conditions play a critical role. Estimates must reflect not only competitive pricing but also the realities of skilled labour availability, sequencing, and the care required to preserve original architectural intent. Working closely with project managers, operations teams, suppliers, and leadership, the Estimator ensures that each bid aligns with real-world installation practices, risk factors, and the level of craftsmanship required for both standard and highly specialized restoration scopes.

Success in this role means consistently delivering accurate, timely bids, identifying risks early, and providing clear cost breakdowns that support efficient execution. Over time, estimating accuracy improves through refined pricing data, labour productivity tracking, and alignment with field operations.

What We Offer

  • Salary Range: $60,000 - $90,000
  • Stable long-term employment with a growing organization
  • Benefits Day 1
  • Exposure to multiple construction and infrastructure sectors
  • Opportunity to grow into project coordination, design management, or estimating roles
  • A culture focused on safety, accountability, teamwork, and practical solutions

What You Bring to the Table

Technical Skills

  • 5+ years of estimating experience within heritage roofing, architectural sheet metal, or specialized building envelope restoration projects
  • Experience estimating steep-slope roofing systems including slate, cedar, tile, and traditional assemblies
  • Strong knowledge of specialty materials such as copper, zinc, lead-coated copper, and ornamental sheet metal systems
  • Experience pricing complex restoration and replication work, including cornices, cupolas, decorative facades, and custom flashing systems
  • Advanced capability in performing detailed take-offs for irregular and non-standard structures, where field verification and assumptions are required
  • Proficiency in Bluebeam and AutoCAD

Attributes

  • Ability to identify scope gaps, cost risks, and constructability concerns during the estimating process
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines simultaneously
  • Clear communication with project managers, suppliers, operations teams, and leadership
  • Strong attention to detail and numerical accuracy
  • Ability to adapt to changing project requirements and tender timelines
  • Problem-solving mindset with a focus on practical, cost-effective solutions
  • Results-oriented professional focused on winning profitable work

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Review and interpret drawings, specifications, and tender documents to fully understand project scope
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates including labour, materials, equipment, and subcontractor scopes
  • Perform accurate quantity take-offs for roofing systems, flashing, insulation, and envelope components
  • Develop labour costing based on productivity expectations and applicable labour agreements
  • Coordinate with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain competitive pricing and ensure availability
  • Analyze project requirements including complex or specialty restoration components where applicable
  • Identify risks, scope gaps, and technical challenges and communicate findings to internal teams
  • Prepare complete bid submissions including cost breakdowns, clarifications, and documentation
  • Collaborate with operations and project teams to ensure alignment between estimate and execution
  • Participate in pre-construction and project handover meetings
  • Maintain organized records of estimates, pricing history, and bid results
  • Track bid outcomes and contribute to continuous improvement of estimating accuracy
