What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Solutions Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solutions Engineer, you need a solid background in technical problem-solving, systems integration, and customer-facing experience, often supported by a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with CRM software, cloud platforms, APIs, and sometimes certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect are commonly required. Outstanding communication, active listening, and adaptability are crucial soft skills to understand client needs and present tailored solutions effectively. These skills and qualities are essential for bridging the gap between technical offerings and client requirements, ensuring project success and customer satisfaction.

How does a Solutions Engineer typically collaborate with sales and technical teams during the sales cycle?

As a Solutions Engineer, you act as a crucial bridge between sales teams and technical experts. You’ll often join client meetings to understand customer requirements, demonstrate product capabilities, and address technical concerns. Your role involves working closely with sales representatives to tailor solutions that meet client needs, while also coordinating with product and engineering teams to ensure proposed solutions are feasible. This collaborative environment requires strong communication skills and the ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.

What are Solutions Engineers?

Solutions Engineers are technical professionals who work closely with sales teams and clients to design, develop, and implement technology solutions that meet specific business needs. They act as a bridge between technical and non-technical stakeholders, helping to translate business requirements into actionable technical solutions. Solutions Engineers often demonstrate products, answer technical questions, and ensure that proposed solutions are viable, scalable, and tailored to the client's requirements. Their role is critical in pre-sales and post-sales processes, ensuring customer satisfaction and successful adoption of products or services.

Job description

We believe that the way people interact with their finances will drastically improve in the next few years. We're dedicated to empowering this transformation by building the tools and experiences that thousands of developers use to create their own products. Plaid powers the tools millions of people rely on to live a healthier financial life. We work with thousands of companies like Venmo, SoFi, several of the Fortune 500, and many of the largest banks to make it easy for people to connect their financial accounts to the apps and services they want to use. Plaid's network covers 12,000 financial institutions across the US, Canada, UK and Europe. Founded in 2013, the company is headquartered in San Francisco with offices in New York, Washington D.C., London and Amsterdam.

The Fintech team at Plaid combines deep product and industry knowledge and is focused on helping both upcoming and well-established Fintechs take their growth to the next level. Our thesis is that every company in Fintech can benefit from leveraging a bespoke Plaid solution, focused on helping them achieve their unique goals and objectives. In this role, you'll be the individual helping us achieve this vision.

Responsibilities

  • Build close customer relationships and identify business value and impact of Plaid across your territory of accounts

  • Go deep and wide in customer and prospect accounts to build support for adopting Plaid solutions

  • Win as a team - in partnership with your outbound sales development rep, account manager, technical account manager, implementation manager, product organization, and other members of your account pod.

  • Deeply understand each customer's goals and priorities, and effectively communicate how Plaid's solutions can help them achieve the desired outcome.

  • Leave no stone unturned - you're a self-starter and take the initiative to get things done before being asked. You think two steps ahead, anticipate potential risks, and take action to proactively mitigate those risks.

  • Identify opportunities for Plaid solutions to deliver value, with both existing and prospective high-growth Fintech customers.

  • Develop a book of high-potential engaged prospects and maintain a sufficient pipeline to support successful attainment against quota.

  • Own the end-to-end sales cycle and coordinate efforts from sales engineers, product specialists, and other team members throughout the sales process.

  • Coordinate cross-functional resources and drive initiatives across Plaid to support a consultative sales motion.

  • Manage pipeline and accurately forecast deal value and win probability.

  • Develop a deep understanding of Plaid solutions and apply this knowledge by identifying how each customer can leverage our technology to achieve their unique goals and objectives.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 7+ years in a quota-carrying direct sales role, with a strong track record of attainment.

  • Excellent prospecting, qualifying, and negotiating skills; consultative sales approach with a customer-centric mindset

  • Working knowledge of APIs and a desire to understand how Plaid works 'under hood'

  • Professional yet relaxed communication style, with the ability to break-down complex concepts and explain them in simple terms to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Ability to engage stakeholders at all levels of an organization.

Our mission at Plaid is to unlock financial freedom for everyone. To support that mission, we seek to build a diverse team of driven individuals who care deeply about making the financial ecosystem more equitable. We recognize that strong qualifications can come from both prior work experiences and lived experiences. We encourage you to apply to a role even if your experience doesn't fully match the job description. We are always looking for team members that will bring something unique to Plaid!
