Position Summary

The Student Safety Coordinator is responsible for promoting and maintaining a safe, secure, and orderly learning environment for students, staff, and visitors. This individual serves as a visible presence throughout the school, proactively monitoring campus activities, building positive relationships with students, and responding to safety concerns with professionalism and sound judgment.

The Student Safety Coordinator works collaboratively with school leadership to implement school safety procedures, support positive student behavior, and ensure compliance with school policies. The ideal candidate is calm under pressure, relationship-oriented, and committed to helping students succeed while maintaining a safe school environment.


Essential Responsibilities

Campus Safety and Security

  • Maintain a visible presence throughout the school during the instructional day, arrival, dismissal, lunch, transitions, and school events.
  • Monitor hallways, entrances, exits, parking lots, and other assigned areas to promote a safe learning environment.
  • Conduct routine safety and security checks of school facilities.
  • Ensure visitors follow established check-in procedures.
  • Respond promptly to safety concerns, emergencies, and incidents.
  • Assist with implementing emergency response procedures, including drills and evacuations.
  • Report safety hazards and security concerns to school leadership.

Student Supervision

  • Supervise students during transitions, lunch periods, assemblies, and other school activities.
  • Build positive relationships with students while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Help de-escalate student conflicts using restorative and trauma-informed practices.
  • Redirect inappropriate behavior and reinforce school expectations.
  • Support administrators during student investigations and disciplinary matters when requested.

Incident Response

  • Respond appropriately to behavioral incidents and emergency situations.
  • Assist with student searches when authorized and in accordance with school policy.
  • Document incidents accurately and submit reports in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate with emergency responders and law enforcement when directed by school leadership.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student and staff information.

School Operations Support

  • Assist with arrival and dismissal procedures.
  • Support special events, athletic events, and after-school activities as assigned.
  • Monitor security cameras and alarm systems as needed.
  • Assist with traffic flow and visitor management.
  • Perform additional duties related to school safety as assigned.


Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in school security, law enforcement, military, corrections, youth services, or a related field.
  • Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions during stressful situations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Preferred

  • Experience working in a high school setting.
  • Training in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI), restorative practices, conflict resolution, or de-escalation techniques.
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED certification (or willingness to obtain).

  • Ability to safely perform physical interventions consistent with district policy and training, when necessary to protect the safety of students or staff.
