Responsibilities

The part-time Technical Theater Assistant works with the Technical Theater Coordinator to facilitate theatrical productions by maintaining the scene shop, maintaining theatrical lighting systems and infrastructure, and assisting in the creation of scenic and stage elements for theatrical productions.

This position will work on-site at Johns Hopkins University Homewood Campus. JHU is recognized as America's first research university, a place that has revolutionized higher education in the U.S. and continues to bring knowledge and discoveries to the world. JHU opened its first-ever student center in August 2025. The 148,000 gross square feet Bloomberg Student Center will transform the student experience by providing spaces, amenities, and opportunities for students who want to socialize, connect, create, and relax. The building is designed to be a welcoming environment for all Hopkins students while extending an invitation to the community through events, programs, and dining opportunities.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Reading and interpreting shop drawings and CAD and VectorWorks drawings.
  • Constructing scenery and developing cut lists.
  • Using a variety of tools, processes, materials, and equipment in completing assigned projects.
  • Assisting in maintaining the safety and efficiency of all scene shop operations.
  • Performing maintenance and upkeep of scene shop, tools, and stage facilities.
  • Participating in the transportation, installation, strike, and disposal of scenery.
  • Ensuring all equipment and setups are safe for performers and crew.
Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Currently enrolled Johns Hopkins University student preferred
  • Previous work experience preferred
  • Previous experience assisting in lighting, sound, set construction or related stage production areas
  • Experience with hand, power, and pneumatic tools
  • Licensed driver

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work independently and/or as part of a small group
  • Ability to make sound decisions and adapt to changing directions
  • Good organizational skills
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Excellent communication skills including active listening
  • Ability to read drafting and shop drawings

  • Must be able to work in high places such as ladders, lifts, grids.

  • Must be able to discuss, converse with, and exchange accurate information with patrons, staff, stakeholders, etc.
