How much do plasma engineering jobs pay per hour?

As of Sep 9, 2026, the average hourly pay for plasma engineering in the United States is $31.55, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $20.19 and $37.98 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is plasma engineering?

A Plasma Engineering job involves the study, design, and application of plasma—ionized gases with unique electrical properties. Plasma engineers work in industries such as aerospace, semiconductors, energy, and materials processing, developing technologies like plasma cutting, propulsion systems, and fusion energy. They apply principles of physics, electromagnetism, and fluid dynamics to create and optimize plasma-based systems. The role often requires expertise in simulations, diagnostics, and experimental techniques.

What are the typical daily tasks and work environments for plasma engineering professionals?

Plasma Engineering professionals often split their time between laboratory settings, where they conduct experiments and operate plasma-generating equipment, and office environments, where they analyze data and develop designs or process improvements. Daily tasks can include calibrating and maintaining equipment, running simulations, interpreting results, and preparing technical reports. Collaboration is frequent, especially with material scientists, mechanical engineers, and production teams, to optimize plasma processes for applications like semiconductor manufacturing or materials coating. The work environment is typically fast-paced and innovative, providing opportunities to contribute to cutting-edge technologies and cross-functional projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in plasma engineering, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Plasma Engineer, you should have a strong background in physics or engineering, with expertise in plasma physics, materials science, and advanced mathematics, typically supported by at least a bachelor's or master's degree in a related field. Familiarity with plasma simulation software, laboratory diagnostic tools, and certifications in safety protocols for working with high-voltage or vacuum systems are often required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork and communication skills will help you excel in diverse research or manufacturing environments. These competencies are vital for designing safe and efficient plasma processes, troubleshooting technical challenges, and collaborating on multidisciplinary projects.

How much do plasma engineers make?

Plasma engineers typically earn a median annual salary between $70,000 and $110,000, depending on experience, education, and location. Advanced skills in plasma physics, engineering tools, and certifications can lead to higher compensation, especially in research or industrial settings.

What do plasma engineers do?

Plasma engineers design, develop, and maintain systems that generate and control plasma for applications such as manufacturing, research, and energy production. They work with specialized equipment, analyze plasma behavior, and ensure safety protocols are followed in laboratory or industrial environments. Strong knowledge of physics, materials science, and technical skills are essential for this role.

Job description

Description

Do you enjoy solving complex plasma physics challenges that impact space missions? Are you passionate about protecting spacecraft and payloads from the harsh environments of space? Do you like contributing to cutting-edge technologies that strengthen our nation's civil and national security space capabilities?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL!

We are seeking a creative, self-starting Plasma Effects Engineer to help us advance the understanding of plasma interactions and their effects on spacecraft, payloads, and space systems operating in both civil and hostile environments. As a member of our team, you'll collaborate with scientists, spacecraft and payload systems engineers, design engineers, and mission planners to ensure critical systems survive and perform reliably in challenging plasma environments. You will be joining a hardworking team of engineers, analysts, and scientists who have played a key role in the analysis, development, testing, and production of advanced spacecraft systems and payloads. We are passionate about solving complex technical challenges through innovative modeling, simulation, and experimentation, and we foster a collaborative environment where technical excellence, continuous learning, and mission impact are valued every day.

As a Plasma Effects Engineer...
  • Your primary responsibility will be to evaluate and mitigate plasma effects on spacecraft and payload systems through advanced modeling, simulation, testing, and technical analysis to ensure mission success in complex space environments.
  • You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to define system requirements, assess plasma interactions, and develop solutions that improve spacecraft survivability and performance.
  • You will develop, execute, and analyze plasma test campaigns using laboratory facilities, particle and plasma sources, and flight or on-orbit testing to validate designs and characterize system behavior.
  • You will generate technical reports, present findings to government sponsors and stakeholders, and contribute to the broader plasma engineering community through mentoring, workshops, and technical collaborations.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Have a B.S. in Physics, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or related engineering or science field.
  • Have 1 or more years of experience related to modeling plasma systems such as gas break down, plasma generators, and vehicle-plasma interactions (charging, wake formation, hypersonic plasmas, etc.).
  • Have experience with laboratory experimental plasma physics including experiment design, instrumentation, plasma generation devices, and laser plasmas.
  • Relevant experience with analysis of plasma data generated from experimental sources and flight tests.
  • Hold an active TS/SCI security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
  • Have the ability to gain SAP access
You go above and beyond the minimumrequirements if you...
  • Have a M.S. or Ph.D. in Physics, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or related engineering or science field.
  • Have knowledge in electric propulsion engineering, spacecraft or other vehicle charging, nuclear plasma engineering, hypersonic plasmas, or impulsive plasma generation (eg hypervelocity impact or laser).
