How much do mechanical engineer startup jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 11, 2026, the average yearly pay for mechanical engineer startup in the United States is $102,878.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $81,500.00 and $126,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the typical responsibilities of a Mechanical Engineer at a startup compared to a larger company?

Mechanical Engineers in startup settings often take on a broader range of responsibilities, including designing components, building prototypes, testing products, and sometimes managing supply chain or manufacturing partners. Unlike in larger companies where roles can be highly specialized, startup engineers frequently wear multiple hats and get involved in early-stage product development, troubleshooting, and even customer feedback loops. This hands-on, cross-disciplinary environment offers rapid learning opportunities and direct impact on product direction. Team sizes are typically smaller, leading to more collaboration across functions like electrical engineering, software, and business operations. If you enjoy working on diverse tasks and seeing your ideas quickly brought to life, a startup can be an exciting and rewarding environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Mechanical Engineer Startup position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Engineer in a startup environment, you need a solid background in mechanical design, prototyping, and problem-solving, typically supported by a degree in mechanical engineering. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), rapid prototyping tools, and hands-on fabrication methods is highly valued, along with relevant certifications like EIT or FE. Strong soft skills such as adaptability, creative thinking, and excellent teamwork are crucial for navigating the fast-paced, resource-constrained startup culture. These abilities are essential for driving innovation, overcoming technical and logistical challenges, and contributing effectively in a dynamic, collaborative setting.

What is a Mechanical Engineer Startup job?

A Mechanical Engineer Startup job involves designing, prototyping, and testing mechanical systems or products in an early-stage company. Engineers in this role often wear multiple hats, working on product development, manufacturing processes, and even cost optimization. They collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including software engineers, designers, and business leaders, to bring innovations to market. The fast-paced startup environment requires adaptability, problem-solving skills, and creativity.

Job description

Mechanical Engineer - Build Next-Generation Hardware at an Advanced Manufacturing Startup!
Los Angeles, CA | On-Site
Opportunity Summary
A rapidly growing deep-tech startup is redefining how advanced computing hardware is designed, manufactured, and scaled. Operating at the intersection of precision engineering, physics, and high-volume production, this team is building complex electro-mechanical systems that push performance limits while remaining manufacturable at scale. As a Mechanical Engineer, you will play a hands-on role in developing highly integrated hardware products from early concepts through production ramp. You'll design everything from micro-scale features to large tooling systems, collaborate closely with electrical, optical, firmware, and process engineers, and directly influence how next-generation hardware moves from prototype to factory floor. If you enjoy solving complex physical problems and seeing your designs manufactured in real time, this is an opportunity to make a tangible impact in a fast-moving startup environment.
About Us
We are a venture-backed technology company building advanced hardware platforms that combine precision mechanics, high-speed electronics, and cutting-edge manufacturing processes. Our team is focused on scaling breakthrough hardware systems that will power the next wave of computing and data infrastructure. By owning both product design and in-house manufacturing, we move quickly, iterate aggressively, and bring complex technology to market faster than traditional hardware companies.
Job Duties
  • Design mechanical components and assemblies from initial requirements through supplier production and manufacturing ramp
  • Develop parts across a wide range of scales, from micro-feature components to large structural hardware and tooling
  • Perform structural and thermal analysis to validate performance and reliability
  • Partner closely with electrical, firmware, optical, and process engineering teams to deliver tightly integrated systems
  • Create fixtures, interfaces, and tooling to support high-throughput manufacturing operations
  • Support design for manufacturability, assembly optimization, and continuous production improvements
  • Translate first-principles engineering concepts into practical, scalable hardware solutions

Qualifications
  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline
  • CAD proficiency with hands-on project experience
  • Strong foundation in mechanical fundamentals and first-principles problem solving
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative engineering environment

Preferred Experience
  • Experience with structural, thermal, or multiphysics analysis tools (ANSYS Mechanical, Icepak, Fluent, or similar)
  • 3+ years of direct experience in a mechanical engineering role supporting product development or manufacturing
  • Exposure to electro-mechanical systems, precision hardware, or advanced manufacturing environments
  • Experience designing for production, tooling, or high-rate assembly lines

Why Join Us
  • Work directly on breakthrough hardware products from concept through production
  • Hands-on ownership in a fast-moving startup environment
  • Opportunity to influence both product design and manufacturing strategy
  • Collaborate with a highly technical, multidisciplinary engineering team
  • Real impact on next-generation computing and hardware infrastructure

Compensation Details
$85,000 - $125,000
