What is a mechanical engineer startup?

A Mechanical Engineer Startup job involves designing, prototyping, and testing mechanical systems or products in an early-stage company. Engineers in this role often wear multiple hats, working on product development, manufacturing processes, and even cost optimization. They collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including software engineers, designers, and business leaders, to bring innovations to market. The fast-paced startup environment requires adaptability, problem-solving skills, and creativity.

What are the typical responsibilities of a mechanical engineer at a startup compared to a larger company?

Mechanical Engineers in startup settings often take on a broader range of responsibilities, including designing components, building prototypes, testing products, and sometimes managing supply chain or manufacturing partners. Unlike in larger companies where roles can be highly specialized, startup engineers frequently wear multiple hats and get involved in early-stage product development, troubleshooting, and even customer feedback loops. This hands-on, cross-disciplinary environment offers rapid learning opportunities and direct impact on product direction. Team sizes are typically smaller, leading to more collaboration across functions like electrical engineering, software, and business operations. If you enjoy working on diverse tasks and seeing your ideas quickly brought to life, a startup can be an exciting and rewarding environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the mechanical engineer startup position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Engineer in a startup environment, you need a solid background in mechanical design, prototyping, and problem-solving, typically supported by a degree in mechanical engineering. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), rapid prototyping tools, and hands-on fabrication methods is highly valued, along with relevant certifications like EIT or FE. Strong soft skills such as adaptability, creative thinking, and excellent teamwork are crucial for navigating the fast-paced, resource-constrained startup culture. These abilities are essential for driving innovation, overcoming technical and logistical challenges, and contributing effectively in a dynamic, collaborative setting.

This Mechanical Engineer role focuses on designing and developing highly customizable electro-mechanical equipment and load banks, from initial requirements through release to manufacturing and startup support. You will collaborate closely with Sales, Electrical Engineering, Drafting, Assembly, Procurement, Test, and field technicians to configure solutions, create detailed designs and drawings, and ensure projects are cost-effective, manufacturable, and delivered on schedule. This position offers the opportunity to act as a technical lead on complex, long-tenure projects within a growing engineering team that supports a new, high-demand product line.

Responsibilities
  • Review and evaluate sales order requirements and specifications to configure and develop mechanical solutions that meet customer needs.
  • Work directly with Sales and, when needed, customers to clarify and resolve technical requirements and application details.
  • Collaborate with Electrical Engineers and Drafting to produce accurate customer drawings and complete design documentation.
  • Act as the technical lead on assigned projects, guiding design decisions and ensuring technical integrity throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Work closely with internal groups such as Assembly, Procurement, and field technicians during startup to resolve technical and design-related issues.
  • Coordinate with Sales and Applications Engineering to align product capabilities with customer requirements and project objectives.
  • Approve project releases to Manufacturing, ensuring designs are complete, accurate, and ready for production.
  • Partner with Assembly and Test departments to troubleshoot and resolve issues encountered during build and test activities.
  • Work as part of a project team to deliver cost-effective, manufacturable designs for electro-mechanical equipment and load banks.
  • Manage and maintain bills of materials (BOMs) to support accurate manufacturing, procurement, and configuration control.
  • Apply project management practices to plan, organize, and track design activities and deliverables.
  • Provide regular updates on project status and timelines to stakeholders, highlighting risks, progress, and key milestones.
  • Contribute to new product development efforts by applying mechanical design, 3D modeling, and CAD expertise to create innovative solutions.
  • Support OEM design activities, ensuring designs meet performance, reliability, and manufacturability targets.
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts related to design processes, documentation, and product performance.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.
  • At least 5 years of experience in designing and developing electro-mechanical equipment.
  • Experience in the development, design, and engineering of mechanical and electrical systems using both 2D and 3D CAD software, with SolidWorks preferred.
  • Strong mechanical design skills, including machine design for complex equipment.
  • Hands-on experience creating, managing, and maintaining bills of materials (BOMs).
  • Demonstrated project management experience, including planning, tracking, and delivering engineering projects.
  • Proficiency in 3D modeling and CAD tools for mechanical design.
  • Experience with OEM design activities, including customization and integration of equipment.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with Sales, Electrical Engineering, Drafting, Assembly, Procurement, Test, and field technicians.
  • Strong communication skills for collaborating with internal teams and interacting with customers on technical requirements.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with Product Data Management (PDM) systems for managing design files and engineering documentation.
  • Background in designing sheet metal products and enclosures.
  • Experience with electrical testing related to electro-mechanical equipment.
  • Customer-facing experience in an engineering or technical support capacity.
  • Experience with highly customizable load banks or similar electro-mechanical systems.
  • Ability to contribute to new product development in a growing engineering organization.
  • Comfort working on long-tenure projects, typically ranging from 6 months to 2 years.
  • Collaborative mindset and ability to thrive in a team of 10 or more engineers.
Work Environment

The role is based in an office environment that is directly attached to a manufacturing floor, providing close access to production and testing activities. Approximately 70% of the workday is spent at a desk performing design, modeling, documentation, and project coordination tasks, while about 30% is spent on the manufacturing floor supporting assembly, test, and startup activities. You will work as part of an engineering team of more than 10 engineers in a growing organization with a new, high-demand product line and long-duration, highly customizable projects.
