About the Role:
Hims & Hers Health, Inc. (better known as Hims & Hers) is looking for an experienced Manager, Material Scientist to support and scale our research and development capabilities. This role will partner closely with the VP of R&D and Innovation to help build and lead material science and pre-formulation efforts, while establishing the infrastructure needed to support continued product innovation and growth.
The Manager will play a critical role in bridging early-stage drug concepts with final formulations, supporting the developability of new and existing products. This includes physicochemical characterization, excipient compatibility, and material risk assessment to ensure quality, stability, and scalability across our portfolio.
You will serve as a key subject matter expert in pre-formulation and material science, helping to shape how these capabilities evolve at Hims & Hers. This is a highly hands-on role with a strong focus on technical execution, while also contributing to longer-term capability building.
You'll work across a range of dosage forms and product types, supporting both new product development and improvements to existing formulations. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to bringing new products from concept through development and into market.
This is a remote role with occasional travel.
You Will:
  • Lead physicochemical characterization of drug substances using techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), DSC/TGA, Raman spectroscopy, and SEM to better understand material properties and behavior
  • Evaluate key drug properties including solubility (pH profile), pKa, logP, and hygroscopicity to inform formulation strategy and product performance
  • Design and interpret excipient compatibility studies to identify potential chemical or physical interactions and ensure product stability and shelf life
  • Partner cross-functionally with R&D, manufacturing, quality, and other teams to address formulation and process challenges across development and production
  • Manage relationships with external partners supporting analytical testing, product development, due diligence, and innovation initiatives
  • Support material qualification efforts, including defining and evaluating specifications for APIs, excipients, vitamins, and minerals
  • Design and implement risk assessments for critical material attributes (CMAs) to ensure consistent product quality and performance
  • Troubleshoot formulation and material-related issues across both development and commercial settings, identifying effective and scalable solutions
  • Contribute to building internal capabilities, processes, and best practices within pre-formulation and material science

You Have:
  • Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related field, with relevant experience in R&D and/or product development (Bachelor's: 10-15+ years, Master's: 5-10+ years, PhD: 5+ years)
  • 2-5+ years of prior people management experience, with the ability to lead and develop technical teams
  • Strong background in material characterization techniques and analytical methods used in pharmaceutical development
  • Deep understanding of physical chemistry, thermodynamics, and drug material properties, including experience applying Biopharmaceutical Classification System (BCS) principles
  • Experience solving complex material or drug performance challenges across development or production environments
  • Experience working cross-functionally to support product development, improvement, and troubleshooting efforts
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and with external partners
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving environment with shifting priorities

Our Benefits (there are more but here are some highlights):
  • Competitive salary & equity compensation for full-time roles
  • Unlimited PTO, company holidays, and quarterly mental health days
  • Comprehensive health benefits including medical, dental & vision, and parental leave
  • Employee Stock Purchase Program (ESPP)
  • 401k benefits with employer matching contribution
  • Offsite team retreats

We are committed to building a workforce that reflects diverse perspectives and prioritizes ethics, wellness, and a strong sense of belonging. If you're excited about this role, we encourage you to apply-even if you're not sure if your background or experience is a perfect match.
