Research Scientist – Roofing & Waterproofing Products

Our client, a roofing & waterproofing growing manufacturer is hiring a Research Scientist – Roofing & Waterproofing Products in southern Florida. Relocation assistance provided,

The Research Scientist will lead the development of innovative roofing and waterproofing solutions for residential and commercial applications. This role focuses on new product development, enhancement of existing technologies, advanced laboratory testing, competitive benchmarking, and valueengineering initiatives that strengthen product performance and market competitiveness.

Key Responsibilities

• Drive product development initiatives, from concept through commercialization, for roofing and waterproofing membranes, underlayment, adhesives, and related systems.

• Investigate and resolve complex technical issues related to product performance, formulation, and field application.

• Apply scientific principles—including statistical analysis, material science, rheology, viscoelasticity, and solid mechanics—to guide product design and optimization.

• Collaborate crossfunctionally with Product Management, Operations, Supply Chain, Engineering, Marketing, Technical Services, and external suppliers.

• Lead plant trials by scaling laboratory formulations to fullscale production, ensuring successful technology transfer.

• Design and execute internal and thirdparty testing programs aligned with regional codes, industry standards, and certification requirements.

• Prepare technical reports, documentation, and presentations to communicate progress, findings, and recommendations to stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Proven experience developing roofing and waterproofing products such as membranes, underlayment, above/belowgrade waterproofing systems, air/vapor barriers, and synthetic adhesives.

• Strong understanding of roofing and waterproofing system codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.

• Demonstrated success taking products from lab development through scaleup and commercial launch.

• Deep knowledge of material science, rheology, viscoelasticity, and solid mechanics.

• Handson experience with analytical and mechanical testing instruments (DMA, TMA, DSC, DSR, FTIR, TGA, UTM, etc.).

• Ability to interpret analytical data and develop predictive correlations for longterm performance and durability.

• Strong analytical and problemsolving skills with the ability to identify innovative approaches that create competitive advantage.

• Effective multitasking and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across technical and nontechnical teams.

Education & Experience Requirements

• Master’s degree in Material Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Polymer Science, Building Science, or related field with 4+ years of relevant experience in asphalt, polymermodified asphalt, polymers, adhesives, concrete, or waterproofing membranes.

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field with 6+ years of relevant experience in asphaltic or polymerbased roofing and waterproofing systems.

• Minimum 10 years of industrial experience in asphaltic products, polymermodified asphalt, polymers, or roofing/waterproofing membranes for commercial or residential applications.

• Ph.D. in Material Science & Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Polymer Science, Organic Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field with 2+ years of experience in asphalt, polymers, adhesives, building materials, concrete, or roofing/waterproofing membranes.
