What is fabrication?

Fabrication in manufacturing refers to the process of constructing products or structures from raw materials, typically involving cutting, bending, and assembling various components. It is commonly used in industries such as metalworking, where sheet metal, pipes, or other materials are shaped and joined to create finished items. Fabrication can include techniques like welding, machining, and forming, and often requires specialized equipment and skilled workers. The end products can range from simple tools to complex machinery and structures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in fabrication?

To thrive in Fabrication, you need a solid understanding of blueprint reading, material properties, and hands-on skills in cutting, welding, and assembling components, often supported by a technical diploma or apprenticeship. Familiarity with CNC machinery, welding equipment, and CAD software, along with relevant certifications like AWS welding certification, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are vital soft skills that help ensure quality and efficiency. These skills and qualifications are crucial for producing precise, safe, and reliable fabricated products that meet industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced in a fabrication role, and how can new hires prepare for them?

In a fabrication role, one common challenge is adapting to frequently changing project requirements, which may involve working with different materials, tools, and specifications. New hires can prepare by developing strong attention to detail, maintaining flexibility, and proactively seeking clarification when blueprints or instructions change. Additionally, effective communication and collaboration with engineers, supervisors, and other team members are crucial to ensuring projects stay on track and meet quality standards. Investing time in learning about workplace safety procedures and equipment maintenance can also help new fabricators succeed and avoid common pitfalls.

Common Search & ComparisonOften compared for skills overlap and job scopeRelated but more specialized in welding tasks

Fabrication involves designing, cutting, and assembling metal parts, often requiring technical skills and certifications. Welding is a specific skill within fabrication focused on joining metals through welding techniques. While fabricators may perform welding, welders specialize in that process. Both roles are essential in manufacturing and construction, but fabrication covers a broader scope of metal work, whereas welding is a specialized skill within that scope.

What job does a fabrication do?

A fabrication job involves cutting, shaping, and assembling metal or other materials to create structures, components, or products. Fabricators often work with tools like welders, grinders, and cutting machines in manufacturing or construction environments, requiring attention to detail and safety precautions.

At Switch, we don’t just design, build and operate data centers—we are enabling the technology of the future. Led by Founder & CEO, Rob Roy, we believe in revolutionary innovation, operational excellence and the principle of karma. Switch is where talented people come together to EVOLVE the digital world.

We believe that innovation isn’t just about technology—it’s about the people, culture, and purpose that make it happen. Every Switch team member contributes to a mission greater than themselves: to create the world’s most advanced digital infrastructure that powers the progress of humanity.

The Role: Fabrication Specialist

The Fabrication Specialist designs and builds custom metal and wood components that support Production and other Switch teams. This role responds to fabrication requests, develops practical solutions, and completes work that meets Switch standards for quality, safety, and cleanliness.

You will work independently on custom fabrication projects and support the Production team when needed to meet customer installation schedules. This is a hands-on role that requires sound judgment, mechanical aptitude, and consistent attention to detail.

What You’ll Do
  • Review and respond to custom fabrication requests from Production and other internal teams.

  • Design practical fabrication solutions based on project needs, drawings, measurements, and field conditions.

  • Fabricate custom metal and wood components using appropriate hand tools, power tools, and welding equipment.

  • Perform MIG and TIG welding in accordance with safety and quality requirements.

  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and dimensional drawings related to data center support equipment.

  • Take accurate measurements and verify dimensions before and during fabrication.

  • Coordinate with vendors when projects require high-volume or specialized fabrication support.

  • Maintain awareness of data center infrastructure procedures that affect fabrication work.

  • Inspect completed work and correct quality issues before delivery or installation.

  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe fabrication and work areas.

  • Support Production activities and customer installation schedules as assigned.

  • Communicate project needs, progress, risks, and completion status to the appropriate team members.

  • Complete required LMS training and assigned development activities.

What We’re Looking For
  • You take pride in producing accurate, durable, and high-quality work.

  • You solve practical fabrication problems using sound judgment and initiative.

  • You work independently while asking for guidance when risks or requirements are unclear.

  • You communicate clearly with team members, vendors, and internal customers.

  • You follow established safety practices when welding, fabricating, and operating tools or equipment.

  • You stay organized while managing multiple assignments and changing priorities.

  • You maintain clean work areas and treat shared spaces with care.

  • You follow through on commitments and complete work on schedule.

  • You contribute to team success during time-sensitive customer installations.

What You’ll Bring

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • At least two years of experience in fabrication, production, facilities, mechanical maintenance, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude with experience in metal and wood fabrication.

  • Experience with MIG and TIG welding.

  • Experience using powered and non-powered hand tools.

  • Ability to take accurate dimensional measurements.

  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.

  • Working knowledge of welding, fabrication, paint, and chemical safety practices.

  • Basic computer skills, including email, Microsoft Outlook, and internal communication tools.

  • Clear verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently and make routine decisions with limited guidance.

  • Valid state-issued driver’s license.

  • Reliable transportation to the work site.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to work extended hours during peak production or installation periods.

  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying environmental conditions.

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the role, including standing, walking, bending, climbing ladders, operating power tools, and carrying materials, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Ability to lift or move up to 50 pounds frequently and more than 100 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodation and using appropriate procedures or equipment.

  • Ability to wear approved Personal Protective Equipment in designated work areas.

  • This position may require additional background checks and drug screenings before or during employment in support of customer-specific deployments.

  • The Company reasonably believes the tasks and duties of this position could affect the safety and health of the employee or others.
