What is a Creative Science?

A Creative Science job combines scientific knowledge with creative problem-solving to develop innovative ideas, products, or solutions. Professionals in this field use analytical thinking and imagination to apply science in new and unique ways, often working in fields like research, design, technology, or communication. They may collaborate on projects that blend science with art, education, media, or product development to make complex concepts more engaging and accessible. Creativity and scientific expertise are equally important in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Creative Science position, and why are they important?

To excel in a Creative Science role, you need a solid background in scientific research or applied sciences, complemented by a flair for innovation and idea generation. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, data analysis software, and creative problem-solving methodologies is commonly expected, and certifications in fields such as laboratory practices or design thinking can be valuable. Strong communication, adaptability, and collaboration are key soft skills for presenting complex concepts in accessible ways and working across multidisciplinary teams. These skills are crucial for driving scientific advancement through inventive solutions and effectively translating research into real-world applications.

What are some common challenges faced in a Creative Science role?

Professionals in Creative Science often navigate the challenge of balancing scientific rigor with innovative thinking, ensuring new ideas are both feasible and grounded in evidence. Adapting to rapidly changing technology and collaborating with team members from diverse backgrounds—such as engineers, designers, and business strategists—can also present unique obstacles. Additionally, translating conceptual ideas into practical experiments or products may require flexibility and strong project management skills. Despite these challenges, the role offers a dynamic work environment where continuous learning and creative problem-solving are highly valued.

Job description

Overview
We're shaping a Frontier Marketing organization that learns faster, activates smarter, and drives measurable impact. Our approach blends human creativity with AI-powered insights to fuel bold, culturally inspired creative strategies at scale. We prioritize outcomes over outputs, embrace rapid learning loops, and operate in agile flight formations that unite disciplines across Commercial Brand, Creative, and Customer Marketing.
The Creative Technologist drives the connection between design and engineering, transforming concepts into real, interactive product experiences. This role ensures our storytelling is grounded in functionality, accurate to the product, secure, visually refined, and ready for capture across social, web, events, keynotes, and all marketing channels.
You will lead the development of front-end design solutions, functional prototypes, tools, and user interface systems that bring Microsoft commercial products to life, accelerate creative exploration, and help teams align around what is technically and creatively possible. The ideal candidate combines systems thinking, strong aesthetic judgment, engineering fundamentals, and hands-on technical depth.
At Microsoft, our mission to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more guides how we partner with customers to deliver trusted, impactful solutions. With a growth-mindset culture, we innovate responsibly and measure success by shared progress, people, teams, and customers. Join us to do meaningful work that changes the world and helps shape what's next for everyone.
Responsibilities
  • Build high-fidelity demonstrations, functional prototypes, and interactive experiences that accurately reflect Microsoft product behavior and strengthen product, brand, and marketing narratives.
  • Deliver film-ready and deployment-ready experiences for product videos, social content, web interactions, events, and keynote demonstrations across commercial marketing channels.
  • Translate ambiguous creative concepts into functional prototypes that accelerate learning, align stakeholders, and enable confident creative and production decisions.
  • Shape cohesive end-to-end experiences with motion designers, visual designers, producers, and creative directors, establishing a high bar for visual craft, interaction quality, and technical execution.
  • Ensure product accuracy and technical feasibility by partnering with product marketing, engineering, and product teams throughout concept development, prototyping, validation, and production.
  • Integrate emerging technologies, including AI-powered tools, browser-based interactivity, real-time engines, code-driven animation, plug-ins, and APIs, to create new storytelling formats and accelerate creative workflows.
  • Scale successful storytelling solutions across teams and channels by establishing reusable patterns, documenting technical approaches, and maintaining shared prototype and tooling libraries.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Graphic Design, Product Design, Visual Design, Human Computer Interaction, or related field AND 3+ years experience working in product or service design and/or shipping production code OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Graphic Design, Product Design, Visual Design, Human Computer Interaction, or related field AND 4+ years experience working in product or service design and/or shipping production code OR equivalent experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated proficiency in one or more creative development and prototyping technologies, such as JavaScript, TypeScript, React, WebGL/Three.js, Unity, Unreal Engine, or equivalent environments.
  • A portfolio demonstrating strong visual and interaction craft, including composition, typography, motion, timing, and polished, production-ready execution.
  • Experience building product demonstrations or interactive storytelling experiences for enterprise, productivity, or technology products.
  • Familiarity with generative AI, foundation models, agentic workflows, or machine-learning-powered creative tooling.
  • Experience with real-time rendering, code-driven animation, motion integration, or technical storytelling for film, social, web, or event production.
  • Experience designing reusable tools, systems, or prototyping frameworks that enable broader creative teams while balancing technical feasibility, product accuracy, brand standards, accessibility, performance, and security.
