Job description

Responsibilities
The Zoning Inspector is responsible for enforcing the City's zoning code and ensuring that development projects comply with approved plans and land use regulations. This position conducts field investigations of zoning complaints, initiates and manages enforcement cases, and performs final inspections to confirm that projects are completed in accordance with approved site plans. The Zoning Inspector works closely with the Zoning Administrator and collaborates with multiple City departments to address zoning issues and support coordinated development review. The role also involves assisting property owners, developers, and residents in understanding zoning requirements and navigating permitting processes to achieve compliance. In addition, the Zoning Inspector supports policy development, staff training, and public communication efforts related to zoning administration. The position may also prepare documentation and provide testimony in court regarding zoning violations when necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Architecture or Urban Planning or a related field AND 6 years of experience in land use planning, zoning administration, code enforcement, water engineering, building regulations or civil engineering.
OR
Associate's degree in Engineering, Architecture or Urban Planning or a related field AND 8 years of experience in land use planning, zoning administration, code enforcement, water engineering, building regulations or civil engineering.
OR
A high school diploma AND 10 years of experience in land use planning, zoning administration, code enforcement, water engineering, building regulations or civil engineering.
Degree must be from a college or university that is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission or equivalent region.
A combination of experiences related to land use, architecture, engineering or construction techniques is strongly preferred. Experience or education in water engineering or sustainability is preferred. ICC certification in listed/related fields is also preferred.
License Requirements
Must possess a valid driver's license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

Background Check
A background investigation and evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity is required prior to employment. All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position, including current city employees seeking transfer, promotion, demotion, etc. into a classified position.

Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination including drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees.
