What is a Zig programmer?

A Zig Programmer is a software developer who specializes in using the Zig programming language to write, maintain, and optimize software. Zig is a relatively new systems programming language designed for safety, performance, and simplicity, often used for building operating systems, game engines, and performance-critical applications. Zig Programmers typically work with low-level code, manage memory manually, and write cross-platform applications. They may also contribute to open-source Zig projects or help migrate codebases from other languages like C or C++. Proficiency in Zig can be valuable for roles that require control over hardware resources and high-performance computing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Zig programmer?

To thrive as a Zig Programmer, you need strong programming fundamentals, a deep understanding of systems programming concepts, and proficiency with the Zig language, often supported by experience in C/C++ and a relevant computer science degree. Familiarity with build systems, version control tools like Git, and debugging utilities is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills ensure the development of efficient, reliable, and maintainable low-level software, critical for performance-sensitive applications.

What are some common challenges Zig programmers face when integrating Zig with existing codebases written in other languages?

Zig Programmers often encounter challenges when integrating Zig with legacy codebases, particularly those written in C or C++. While Zig offers excellent interoperability, developers must carefully manage differences in memory management, data structure alignment, and calling conventions. Debugging cross-language issues can also be complex, so attention to detail and thorough testing are essential. Collaborating with teams familiar with the host language and maintaining clear documentation can help mitigate these challenges.

What is the difference between Zig Programmer vs C Programmer?

AspectZig ProgrammerC Programmer
Required CredentialsKnowledge of Zig language, programming fundamentalsProficiency in C language, programming fundamentals
Work EnvironmentEmbedded systems, system programming, cross-platform developmentEmbedded systems, operating systems, software development
Industry UsageEmerging projects, systems requiring safety and performanceWidespread in software, embedded, and systems programming

Both Zig Programmers and C Programmers work in system-level development, often in embedded or performance-critical environments. Zig is a newer language designed for safety and simplicity, while C is a longstanding language with extensive legacy code. Skills in one can often transfer to the other, but Zig Programmers focus on modern features and safety, whereas C Programmers work with a more established, low-level language.

What can I do with the Zig programmer?

A Zig programmer is responsible for developing and maintaining software using the Zig programming language, which emphasizes safety, performance, and simplicity. They typically write code for systems, embedded devices, or performance-critical applications, often working with tools like debuggers and build systems. Skills in low-level programming and understanding of hardware are beneficial in this role.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Software Engineer - Advisory Suite based in Netherlands.

Join a globally distributed engineering team building high-performance infrastructure for modern financial services.
You'll develop proprietary services supporting sophisticated advisory products, including portfolio management, block trading, and retirement accounts.
The role offers the opportunity to shape architecture and engineering practices at an early stage, with substantial ownership and autonomy.
You'll work across frontend and backend systems, databases, distributed architectures, concurrency, and performance optimization.
Your work will directly influence the reliability, scalability, and quality of products used by financial institutions and millions of brokerage accounts.
The environment is highly technical and fast-paced, suited to engineers who enjoy solving complex systems challenges and making critical architectural decisions.
This is an opportunity to make a significant impact while working on demanding, high-throughput financial technology.

Accountabilities
  • Design, architect, and build proprietary services supporting advisory products such as block trading, portfolio management, and retirement accounts.
  • Develop robust, scalable software across frontend, backend, databases, and distributed systems.

  • Build and optimize low-latency, high-throughput systems capable of supporting demanding financial workloads.
  • Develop and implement solutions for order management and other high-volume financial transactional systems.
  • Work across different levels of the technology stack, from low-level performance optimization to high-level distributed system architecture.
  • Contribute extensively to the codebase while taking ownership of engineering quality, reliability, and performance.
  • Collaborate within a small, highly technical team where engineers are expected to take on broad responsibilities and wear multiple hats.
  • Continuously evaluate and improve system performance through benchmarking, profiling, observability, and technical optimization.
Requirements
  • Proven professional software engineering experience within trading or exchange environments, such as OMS, EMS, exchanges, market making, algorithmic trading, or quantitative trading.
  • Strong senior-level software engineering experience, with the ability to independently own complex technical problems.
  • Solid system design expertise, including object-oriented data modeling, service-oriented architecture, system abstraction, and distributed system design.
  • Strong programming skills across low- and high-level languages such as C/C++, Go, Zig, Rust, Java, Scala, or Python.
  • Demonstrated experience optimizing systems for low latency and high throughput.
  • Strong knowledge of algorithms, distributed systems, scalability, high availability, databases, concurrency control, and performance-oriented architecture.
  • Experience designing or implementing Order Management Systems (OMS) and/or highly loaded financial transactional systems.
  • Experience working with messaging queues and message brokers.
  • Analytical and data-oriented approach to problem-solving, with strong attention to system behavior and performance.
  • Ability to work effectively in an early-stage, fast-moving environment with significant autonomy and technical ownership.
  • Knowledge of the FIX protocol is a plus.
  • Experience with observability, distributed tracing, continuous profiling, and benchmarking is a plus.
Benefits
