What is a Zig programmer?

A Zig Programmer is a software developer who specializes in using the Zig programming language to write, maintain, and optimize software. Zig is a relatively new systems programming language designed for safety, performance, and simplicity, often used for building operating systems, game engines, and performance-critical applications. Zig Programmers typically work with low-level code, manage memory manually, and write cross-platform applications. They may also contribute to open-source Zig projects or help migrate codebases from other languages like C or C++. Proficiency in Zig can be valuable for roles that require control over hardware resources and high-performance computing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Zig programmer?

To thrive as a Zig Programmer, you need strong programming fundamentals, a deep understanding of systems programming concepts, and proficiency with the Zig language, often supported by experience in C/C++ and a relevant computer science degree. Familiarity with build systems, version control tools like Git, and debugging utilities is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills ensure the development of efficient, reliable, and maintainable low-level software, critical for performance-sensitive applications.

What are some common challenges Zig programmers face when integrating Zig with existing codebases written in other languages?

Zig Programmers often encounter challenges when integrating Zig with legacy codebases, particularly those written in C or C++. While Zig offers excellent interoperability, developers must carefully manage differences in memory management, data structure alignment, and calling conventions. Debugging cross-language issues can also be complex, so attention to detail and thorough testing are essential. Collaborating with teams familiar with the host language and maintaining clear documentation can help mitigate these challenges.

What is the difference between Zig Programmer vs C Programmer?

AspectZig ProgrammerC Programmer
Required CredentialsKnowledge of Zig language, programming fundamentalsProficiency in C language, programming fundamentals
Work EnvironmentEmbedded systems, system programming, cross-platform developmentEmbedded systems, operating systems, software development
Industry UsageEmerging projects, systems requiring safety and performanceWidespread in software, embedded, and systems programming

Both Zig Programmers and C Programmers work in system-level development, often in embedded or performance-critical environments. Zig is a newer language designed for safety and simplicity, while C is a longstanding language with extensive legacy code. Skills in one can often transfer to the other, but Zig Programmers focus on modern features and safety, whereas C Programmers work with a more established, low-level language.

What can I do with the Zig programmer?

A Zig programmer is responsible for developing and maintaining software using the Zig programming language, which emphasizes safety, performance, and simplicity. They typically write code for systems, embedded devices, or performance-critical applications, often working with tools like debuggers and build systems. Skills in low-level programming and understanding of hardware are beneficial in this role.

Job description

Remilia is building a consumer social platform where the social graph, long-form content, real-time chat, and a virtual economy operate on a shared entity-relationship data model.

We're looking for software engineers who care about craft, interesting engineering challenges and who want to work in a squad that owns its surface area end to end.

Our stack is intentionally boring technology and a minimal dependency monorepo: Go, SQLite, TypeScript/React.

Responsibilities

Youโ€™ll be working on identity services, user profiles, real-time chat, timeline-style content, friends/social graph, feed content algorithms, and admin and user dashboards.

Your exact responsibilities will depend on your skill set and interests. We have multiple front-ends, Go services, IAM systems, generative AI features, content management systems, external APIs, a mobile app, 3rd-party app integrations, real-time events over websockets, media pipelines, and many other engineering areas to work on.

Good to have:
  • A portfolio of interesting work you can walk through
  • Experience shipping things end to end
  • Founding-engineer or 0โ†’1 experience on startup teams
Background or interest working in any of the following:
  • Real-time systems (WebSockets, SSE)
  • Systems programming (C/C++/Rust/Zig)
  • Relational databases (data modeling, indexing, query design)
  • Media pipelines (upload, processing, delivery)
  • In-game social systems, chat, community, or UGC products
Us:
  • Independent and well-capitalized
  • Engaged alpha user community
  • High-autonomy squads inside a growing org
  • Ambitious Xanadu/Semantic Web inspired vision
Benefits:
  • Seed stage equity
  • Learning/health/culture stipends, PTO, health insurance
  • Creative studio environment

All roles in-office (Irvine, California).
