What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a Zero Hour Contract role, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Zero Hour Contract role, you typically need flexibility, reliability, and any job-specific skills or qualifications required by the employer. Familiarity with scheduling apps, time-tracking tools, and sometimes industry-related certifications (such as food safety or first aid) can be advantageous. Strong communication, adaptability, and self-motivation help individuals stand out, as work hours and duties can vary widely. These qualities are important because they enable workers to quickly respond to shifting demands, maintain performance, and secure ongoing assignments.

What is the difference between Zero Hour Contract vs Part-Time Worker?

AspectZero Hour ContractPart-Time Worker
Work HoursVariable, no guaranteed hoursFixed, scheduled hours
Employment RightsLimited, depends on hours workedFull employment rights
Pay StructurePaid per hour workedPaid per hour, often with benefits
Work EnvironmentFlexible, often casualConsistent, regular hours

Zero Hour Contracts offer flexible, on-demand work with no guaranteed hours, suitable for employers needing adaptable staffing. Part-Time Workers have scheduled hours and more employment rights, providing stability. Understanding these differences helps job seekers choose roles that match their needs and expectations.

What are zero hour contracts?

Zero hour contracts are employment agreements where an employer is not obligated to provide any minimum number of working hours, and the worker is not obliged to accept any work offered. This type of contract offers flexibility for both employers and employees, but it can also result in unpredictable income for workers. Zero hour contracts are commonly used in industries with fluctuating demand, such as hospitality and retail. Workers on zero hour contracts are entitled to basic employment rights, such as the national minimum wage, paid holiday, and rest breaks.

What are some common challenges faced by employees working under a zero hour contract, and how can they be managed?

One common challenge for those on zero hour contracts is the unpredictability of work hours, which can make financial planning and scheduling personal commitments more difficult. Additionally, there may be periods with little to no work, especially during off-peak times, impacting income stability. To manage these challenges, many employees seek multiple zero hour opportunities or supplement their income with other part-time work. Building strong communication with employers and being proactive about availability can also help secure more consistent shifts.

Job description

Zero Trust Architect

The Opportunity:

Everyone knows security needs to be "baked in" to system architecture, but you know how to bake it in. You can identify and implement ways to harden systems and reduce their attack surface. What if you could use your cyber engineering skills to design and build secure systems for the U.S. Government? We're looking for a Cybersecurity Engineer with Zero Trust (ZT) experience who can create solutions for the government that will stand up to even the most advanced cyber threats.

As a Cybersecurity Architect on our project, you'll be part of the architecture and design efforts of innovative cybersecurity solutions and service offerings to protect information systems and networks. You'll coordinate with a dynamic team of thought leaders and experts to identify the right mix of tools and techniques to translate your customer's IT needs and future goals into a plan that will enable secure and effective solutions. We need to come up with the best solution, so you'll investigate new techniques, break free from the legacy model, and go where the industry is going. You'll lead the team through a critical approach to network design, providing alternatives and customizing solutions to maintain a balance of security and mission needs. This is a chance to make a difference in the security of the U.S. Government. Your technical expertise will be vital as you help customers overcome their most difficult challenges by leading cybersecurity technologies and domains, including IoT and Cloud security, Automation and Orchestration (A&O), identity and access management, and machine learning. Join our team as we tackle cybersecurity challenges around ZT and shape opportunities to implement solutions and service offerings leveraging investments and proven capabilities.

Join us. The world can't wait.

You Have:

  • 10+ years of experience with IT operations or cybersecurity
  • 10+ years of experience leading technical solution development for large, complex organizations
  • Experience architecting ZT solutions, roadmaps, and capabilities in alignment with industry standards, including NIST 800-207, OMB Mandates, and DoD ZT Reference Architecture
  • Experience leading product selection initiatives
  • Knowledge of the ZT technology ecosystem, including ZTNA, SSE, SASE, IDP, IDS, DLP, SWG, EDR, MFA, data tagging, or comply to connection (C2C)
  • Knowledge of leading ICAM solutions, including MSFT Entra, AD, or LDAP, and how they are part of the ZT ecosystem
  • Knowledge of network technologies, including SD-WAN, MPLS, or satellite, and how they play a part in delivering a ZT cyber solution
  • Ability to author technical documentation, whitepapers, and blogs on leading cybersecurity topics and concepts
  • Secret clearance
  • HS diploma or GED

Nice If You Have:

  • Experience in a cybersecurity compliance, operations, or engineering leadership role
  • Experience selecting, designing, and implementing security tools and capabilities for large, complex federal or commercial organizations
  • Experience with AWS, Azure, or GCP
  • Possession of excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Top Secret clearance
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Information Security Certification such as CEH, CISM, CCSP, CCSK, CISSP, or CompTIA Security+ Certification
  • DoD 8570 IASAE Level III Certification such as CISSP-ISSAP, CISSP-ISSEP, or CCSP Certification

Clearance:

Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information; Secret clearance is required.
