Youth Care Worker Job Summary

The Youth Care Worker (YCW) is responsible for the direct supervision of youth in care and always maintaining line-of- sight. Responsible for the documentation and supervision of youth progress while in care in compliance to all Texas Department of Family and Protective/Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) Minimum Standards on an ongoing basis.

Essential Functions:

  1. Provide direct supervision and oversight of youth in care during assigned work schedule.
  2. Interact with youth to build rapport and serve as a role model, while ensuring a safe, secure, and caring environment.
  3. Assist in teaching daily life skills, in accordance with youthโ€™s treatment plan, recommendations, and restrictions.
  4. Apply Crisis Prevention Intervention techniques to deescalate and stabilize the youth when necessary.
  5. Provide documentation of observable behaviors; interventions; daily progress notes; and other required information as required by supervisor and/or senior management.
  6. Remain positive and respectful, mindful of cultural differences, with the ability to assist during any department activities.
  7. Assist with indoor and outdoor recreational activities and occasional court, medical, and discharge appointments.
  8. Assist with intake process to include the distribution of personal items, meals, and clothing.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Preferred Education/Work Experience:

Level: High School Diploma or equivalent

  1. Bachelorโ€™s degree in human services field is preferred but not required.
  2. At least one (1) year of ORR Residential Care Services experience is preferred but not required.
  3. One (1) year of previous work/volunteer experience with juveniles is required.
  4. A valid, active driver's license and clean driving record are preferred.
  5. Must be 21 years old or older.

Working Conditions:

The YCW is required to maintain a flexible, organized, and efficient work schedule and is subject to work extended hours, weekends, and be on-call. Travel as needed for trainings, conferences or to transport youth to destinations located within the U.S.

Work is performed mostly in a residential facility setting, with occasional work in outdoor environmental conditions outside the facility. Some overnight travel, public speaking, evening, and weekend work are the requirements of the position. Regular computer work is also required. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit or stand for extended periods; walk; finger, handle, or feel objects, or controls; reach; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch; talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
