Job description

We have an immediate opening in the Morgantown, WV area for an experienced Transportation Construction Manager to oversee large-scale West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT) and local government projects, including both design-bid-build and design-build work. This role offers the chance to lead a talented construction staff and make a direct impact on roadway and bridge projects that shape the region.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage construction activities both in the field and in the office.
  • Lead and mentor construction staff, ensuring proper training and adherence to project standards.
  • Interpret and enforce contract plans, specifications, and shop drawings.
  • Oversee documentation, maintain construction records, and ensure contract compliance.
  • Review contractor schedules, including initial CPM and monthly updates.
  • Resolve field conflicts and disputes efficiently.
  • Coordinate and conduct project meetings.
  • Maintain regular, clear communication with the Engineer, Owner, operational staff, and field teams.
  • Foster strong relationships with stakeholders, including the traveling public.
  • Monitor and enforce project safety requirements.
  • Perform field inspections as needed.

Qualifications

  • Certification: TRETCNO โ€“ Level V or TRETCNO โ€“ Level V with the WVTRET Certification Board or equivalent, specifically:
    • BS in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or similar technical degree plus 7 years of technical experience; OR
    • AS in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or similar technical degree plus 10 years of technical experience.
  • Significant experience in roadway and bridge construction.
  • Experience with local government projects a plus.
  • Experience in construction inspection/management, design-build project management, and CPM scheduling preferred.
  • Full WVDOT materials certification preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and shop drawings.
  • Strong written, verbal, and drawing skills to prepare inspection reports.
  • Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Word & Excel) for electronic documentation.
  • Valid driverโ€™s license with a clean driving record.

Physical Requirements (Essential Functions):

This position requires the ability to perform a variety of physical tasks in the field as part of the essential job functions. Duties may include:

  • Walking and navigating across rough or uneven terrain such as mud, rocks, grass, dirt, steep hillsides, heavily wooded areas, and other unpaved surfaces
  • Moving around active project sites, which may involve climbing ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, or poles
  • Performing physical activities such as bending, twisting, kneeling, and climbing
  • Remaining in a stationary positionโ€”either standing or sittingโ€”for extended periods of time
  • Repetitive motions involving the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
  • Lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds and/or carting objects up to 50 lbs distances up to 50 yards.
  • Driving to and from project sites which may involve distances of up to or exceeding 75 miles round trip.
  • Must be able to function safely in an environment with potential risks, including, but not limited to those described in this document.

The work environment may include exposure to a range of environmental conditions, including high and low temperatures, precipitation, and other outdoor elements. Work may also be performed in noisy conditions or confined/enclosed spaces.
