To thrive as a Workplace Designer, you need expertise in interior design principles, space planning, and a relevant degree (such as in interior design or architecture). Proficiency in design software like AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUp, as well as knowledge of building codes and sustainability standards, is typically required. Strong communication, creativity, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate effectively with clients and multidisciplinary teams. These skills are crucial for creating functional, attractive, and productive work environments that meet organizational needs.

What are workplace designers?

Workplace designers are professionals who plan, design, and create functional, attractive, and efficient office and work environments. They combine knowledge of architecture, interior design, ergonomics, and organizational needs to optimize spaces for productivity, collaboration, and employee well-being. Their role often involves consulting with clients to understand company culture and workflow, then developing layouts, selecting furnishings, and ensuring the space meets safety and accessibility standards.

How does a Workplace Designer typically collaborate with other departments during an office redesign project?

Workplace Designers often work closely with a variety of departments, including HR, IT, and facilities management, to ensure that the new office layout supports both productivity and employee well-being. They coordinate with HR to understand organizational needs and workforce demographics, consult with IT to integrate technology seamlessly, and partner with facilities teams to address logistical constraints. Regular meetings and feedback sessions help align the design with company goals and ensure the space meets all stakeholders' requirements. This collaborative process is essential for creating functional, inspiring work environments that reflect company culture.

Job description

Alfred Williams & Company is seeking an organized, collaborative and creative professional to support workplace design initiatives through a blend of design coordination, project management, field support and client engagement. This role helps ensure projects move efficiently from concept through installation while delivering an exceptional client experience.
The ideal candidate enjoys balancing creative problem-solving with operational execution and is comfortable collaborating with clients, vendors and cross-functional internal teams. Experience supporting healthcare environments or healthcare-focused workplace projects is especially valued.
This is not a sales role. However, the position requires a strong customer-service mindset and the ability to build positive working relationships throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Workplace Solutions
  • Support the development of workplace design concepts, space plans, finish selections and presentation materials.
  • Conduct field measurements, site visits and on-site verifications to help ensure design accuracy and project alignment.
  • Assess existing site conditions and communicate findings to project stakeholders.
  • Participate in client walk-throughs, pre-installation meetings and installation support activities.
  • Assist with furniture and product specifications aligned with client goals, budgets and project requirements.
  • Collaborate with design teams, account managers and vendor partners to develop cohesive workplace solutions.
  • Prepare client-facing presentations, mood boards, renderings and design documentation.

Project Coordination & Execution
  • Manage project timelines, schedules, deliverables and follow-up tasks across multiple projects.
  • Coordinate communication between internal teams, vendors, installers and clients to support project alignment.
  • Monitor project milestones and proactively identify potential risks or delays.
  • Assist with order coordination, project documentation, meeting notes and implementation tracking.
  • Support installation planning, punch-list coordination and project closeout activities.
  • Travel to client locations for field reviews, site coordination and project support during various phases of project execution.
  • Support account managers by preparing materials, coordinating meetings and responding to client requests.
  • Build trusted working relationships through professionalism, responsiveness and solution-oriented communication.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Interior Design, Architectural Products, Business, Project Management, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in workplace design, interiors, project coordination, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of design principles, furniture systems, finishes and space planning.
  • Experience coordinating projects involving multiple stakeholders, timelines and competing priorities.
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to balance creative thinking with operational execution.
  • Comfortable conducting site visits, field measurements and working in active client environments.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting healthcare environments or healthcare-focused workplace projects.
  • Familiarity with design and visualization software such as AutoCAD, CET, SketchUp, Bluebeam, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar platforms.
  • Experience preparing presentations, renderings and client-facing design materials.

Work Environment & Travel
  • This role includes travel to client sites for field reviews, installations and project coordination activities.
  • Candidates should be comfortable working in both office and client-site environments.
