What are working accountants?

Working accountants are professionals responsible for managing, analyzing, and reporting on financial information within organizations. They handle tasks such as bookkeeping, preparing financial statements, ensuring compliance with tax laws, and supporting budgeting and auditing processes. Their work ensures that companies maintain accurate financial records and make informed business decisions. Working accountants can specialize in areas like tax, management, or auditing, and they often collaborate with other departments to maintain financial health.

Can you make $100,000 as an accountant?

Accountants can earn $100,000 or more annually, especially with experience, advanced certifications like CPA, and working in high-paying industries or managerial roles. Salaries vary based on location, specialization, and level of responsibility, with senior accountants and those in corporate finance often reaching or exceeding this threshold.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

High-level sales roles, such as real estate brokers or sales managers, can earn $10,000 or more monthly through commissions and performance bonuses, often without requiring a formal degree. Skilled trades like certain construction or electrical work may also reach this income level with experience and certifications, especially in high-demand markets.

What kind of jobs can I do with accounting?

With an accounting background, you can pursue roles such as accountant, bookkeeper, auditor, financial analyst, tax preparer, or controller. These jobs typically require skills in financial reporting, use of accounting software, and understanding of financial regulations.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals in a working accounting role, and how can they be managed?

These abilities ensure accurate financial reporting, compliance with regulations, and clear collaboration with clients and stakeholders.

Accounting and Tax Manager
Lead the accounting and tax relationship for a group of small business owners who count on you year-round - with an experienced team behind you and a clear path to grow.
About TMA
TMA Small Business Accounting, P.C. is an Indianapolis firm that has served small business owners across Indiana for more than 25 years. TMA brings accounting, payroll, and taxes together for 300+ small businesses under one roof - one team, integrated systems, year-round support. Learn more at .
Role Overview
The Accounting and Tax Manager leads the service relationship for an assigned group of small business clients. It's a role with real responsibility: you are TMA's primary point of contact for your assigned clients, the lead on their tax and accounting work, and a manager who helps develop the Staff Accountants and Project Accountants who support that work. You'll work directly with business owners throughout the year - not just at tax time - helping them stay ahead of their obligations and run stronger businesses.
What You'll Do
Maintain and Enhance Client Relationships
  • Serve as the primary point of contact and trusted resource for an assigned group of small business clients, building lasting relationships through responsiveness and a genuine desire to be of service.
  • Communicate proactively throughout the year, answering questions on accounting and tax matters as they arise.
  • Lead the onboarding of new clients, guiding them onto TMA's monthly system and setting the foundation for a strong, lasting relationship.

Lead Tax Services
  • Oversee the timely, accurate preparation and delivery of business and personal income tax returns for your assigned clients, performing preparation and quality-control review as appropriate.
  • Help clients plan ahead for taxes by advising them of their obligations before they are due, so they have every opportunity to prepare and are never caught off guard.

Oversee Accounting and Quality Control
  • Provide quality control over the financial statements and work product for your assigned clients, ensuring accuracy and timely delivery.
  • Review work submitted to you by teammates and return it with timely, constructive feedback.
  • Manage the workflow of your assigned clients so deadlines are consistently met throughout the year, including the busier Q1 filing months.

Supervise and Support the Service Team
  • Help ensure your clients are served efficiently and well.
  • Supervise the Staff Accountants and Project Accountants assigned to your clients' work, monitoring production and supporting their growth.
  • Serve as a first resource for their questions, resolving issues and escalating to firm leadership when a matter calls for it.

Qualifications:
  • An active CPA or EA credential. Candidates actively pursuing the CPA license will also be considered.
  • Experience in public accounting, tax preparation, or small business accounting, with a strong working knowledge of business and individual income tax.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field.
  • A natural relationship-builder who communicates clearly and earns the trust of business owners.
  • Someone who enjoys helping others grow and holding work to a high standard of quality.
  • Organized and able to manage a full group of clients and multiple deadlines with confidence and independence.
  • Tech-savvy and able to learn new tools quickly. Experience with QuickBooks Online and professional tax software preferred.

Compensation and Benefits
  • $80,000-$120,000 yearly depending on experience and other qualifications
  • Discretionary annual bonus
  • Medical, dental, and vision plans
  • 401(k) with matching
  • PTO - 120 hours per year, with additional PTO after 5 and 10 years of service
  • 15+ employee events per year, including Family Day at Victory Field

Culture and Growth
  • Stable, established firm with 95%+ client retention and consistent growth
  • Named one of the Best Places to Work in Indiana, 2025 and 2026
  • Collaborative team environment with experienced CPAs, EAs, and CPPs
  • Professional development included - TMA supports continuing professional education and the maintenance of your CPA or EA credential
  • Work that matters - we help small business owners build stronger businesses

Location and Schedule
  • In-office at our Indianapolis location: 9595 Whitley Drive, Suite 102
  • Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Up to 20% work-from-home flexibility, earned after six months
