What is a workforce manager?

A workforce manager oversees productivity at a company. Your duties are to assess, analyze, and report on employee productivity at the individual, departmental, and institutional levels. Your job is to determine how best to utilize the productivity and skills of each employee using the techniques and theories of workforce management (WFM). You track labor time using daily, weekly, and monthly measurements. The career requires keen attention to detail and communication and problem-solving skills. Other qualifications include at least a bachelor’s degree in business and experience in human resources, service provision, or production.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a workforce manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Workforce Manager, you need expertise in workforce planning, data analysis, and a solid understanding of HR policies, typically supported by a degree in business, human resources, or a related field. Familiarity with workforce management systems (such as Kronos or NICE), scheduling software, and strong Excel skills are commonly required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and leadership abilities help drive team performance and handle dynamic staffing needs. These skills ensure efficient resource allocation, cost control, and optimal employee productivity within an organization.

How does a workforce manager typically collaborate with other departments to optimize staffing levels?

A Workforce Manager regularly collaborates with department heads, HR, and operations teams to ensure staffing aligns with business needs. This involves analyzing workload forecasts, discussing shift requirements, and adapting schedules to accommodate fluctuations in demand. Effective communication and data sharing are crucial, as Workforce Managers must balance employee availability with service level goals. By working closely with other departments, they help maintain optimal staffing while minimizing overtime and reducing turnover.

Job description

Manufacturing Workforce Operations Manager

Location: West Point, GA

Shift: 2nd Shift (flexibility required to support multiple shifts)

Salary: BOE

A day in this role

As the on-site leader for the 2nd shift, you arrive before the handoff and scan the latest KPIs—attendance, quality holds, headcount attainment, and downtime. You brief production leadership on safety priorities, walk the floor to verify standard work, and connect with team leads on staffing needs and escalation plans. Throughout the shift, you coach supervisors, resolve employee relations matters, coordinate onboarding and training statuses, and drive countermeasures to hit safety, quality, delivery, and cost targets. Before shift-end, you capture lessons learned, communicate cross-shift plans, and ensure a smooth transition for continuous operations.

What you will lead Operations Leadership
  • Own daily 2nd shift production performance against safety, quality, delivery, and cost goals.
  • Track KPIs: productivity, attendance, quality performance, downtime, turnover, and staffing attainment.
  • Maintain strong cross-shift continuity and execution.
Workforce Management
  • Drive attendance, retention, engagement, and performance outcomes.
  • Oversee orientation and training tracking for both new hires and current employees.
  • Support employee relations via coaching, counseling, investigations, and corrective actions.
  • Ensure adherence to company policies, labor regulations, and customer requirements.
Quality & Continuous Improvement
  • Uphold OEM standards, customer specs, and internal quality systems.
  • Identify and implement improvements to elevate engagement, efficiency, and workforce performance.
Safety & Compliance
  • Champion a safe workplace aligned with OSHA and company policies.
  • Meet customer, industry, and organizational compliance requirements.
Qualifications Required
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • 3–5 years in manufacturing, operations, staffing, workforce management, or similar leadership roles.
  • Deep knowledge of workforce planning, engagement, recruiting, and onboarding.
  • Experience with Lean, continuous improvement, and performance management.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, HRIS/ATS, ERP, and production reporting tools.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational capabilities.
Preferred
  • Automotive manufacturing background.
  • Lean Manufacturing certification.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt.
  • Knowledge of IATF 16949, ISO 9001, or similar QMS frameworks.
  • High-volume production experience.
  • Project management experience or certification.
  • Experience managing contingent labor programs or staffing operations.
Physical Requirements
  • Extended time on the manufacturing floor.
  • Frequent standing, walking, and movement through production areas.
  • Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Flexibility to support business needs outside regular shift schedules when required.
