UNIVERSITY SETTLEMENT SOCIETY OF NEW YORK

Manhattan, NY

$19.50 - $25.50/hr

Full-time

Re-posted 10 days ago

Job description

University Settlement partners with 40,000+ New Yorkers in Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn every year to build on our collective strengths as we achieve healthy, stable, and remarkable lives. For nearly 140 years, we’ve fought poverty and systemic inequality by building highly effective social services in collaboration with our neighbors. Established in 1886 as the first Settlement House in the United States, we bring the values of that movement into the 21st century by meeting New Yorkers where they live, listening deeply to all perspectives, and creating space for responsive cooperation.

Joining with our neighbors to make stable foundations where people of all ages can grow and pursue their dreams, we build community strength. We infuse a commitment to civic engagement, equality, and communal action into each of our programs, which include early childhood education, youth development, healthy aging, mental health and wellness, English classes for adult immigrants, community centers, and the arts.

The Adult Literacy Program provides ESOL classes to immigrant adults in New York City. The Healthcare Bridge Program will help participants complete an 8-week Home Health Aide (HHA) certification alongside contextualized ESOL instruction focused on the medical field. The program is designed to prepare students for immediate employment while building pathways toward advanced certifications such as CNA or Medical Assistant.

Position Summary:

The Workforce Counselor provides comprehensive case management and career counseling to adult learners enrolled in the Healthcare Bridge Program. This role supports students from recruitment through post-employment follow-up, ensuring they successfully complete training, secure employment, and advance along healthcare career pathways. The counselor works closely with instructors, program staff, and external partners to address barriers, strengthen employability skills, and connect participants to ongoing education and workforce opportunities.

Responsibilities:

Student Support & Case Management

  • Conduct student intake, assessments, and eligibility screenings to determine participant needs and develop individualized service and employment plans.

  • Provide ongoing case management, academic advising, and support to address barriers to participation, including childcare, transportation, and other personal or employment-related challenges.

  • Maintain regular contact with participants to monitor attendance, progress, retention, and successful program completion.

Workforce Development & Job Readiness

  • Deliver employment readiness services, including resume and cover letter development, mock interviews, workplace communication, professionalism, teamwork, and workers' rights in the healthcare field.

  • Prepare students for successful participation in the Home Health Aide (HHA) training program and support their understanding of healthcare career pathways, including opportunities for advancement to CNA, Medical Assistant, and other healthcare professions.

Job Placement & Career Pathways

  • Connect participants with employment opportunities in home healthcare and related industries.

  • Coordinate with program partners and the Assistant Director to facilitate job placement, onboarding, and successful transition into employment.

  • Provide follow-up support for up to three months after program completion to promote job retention and career advancement.

Program Coordination & Data Management

  • Collaborate with ESOL instructors, the Educational Supervisor, Assistant Director, and partner agencies to ensure coordinated student support and referrals.

  • Maintain accurate student records, attendance, progress notes, and employment outcomes in required databases, and assist with tracking program performance measures and grant deliverables.

Community Engagement & Additional Duties

  • Support student recruitment and community outreach efforts, collaborate with staff to ensure language access when needed, and perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Human Services, Education, Psychology, Business, or a related field required

  • Experience in workforce development, career counseling, case management, or adult education preferred

  • Ability to interface with immigrant and/or multilingual learners

  • Bilingual skills (e.g., Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Russian, or other high-need languages) highly desirable

  • Knowledge of healthcare career pathways (HHA, CNA, Medical Assistant) preferred

  • Strong understanding of employment readiness, job placement strategies, and career coaching

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills

  • Warm, flexible, friendly, and collaborative working style

  • Ability to manage a high caseload and work both independently and collaboratively

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, SharePoint and Google Workspace; experience with data systems preferred

Please Note:  This is a grant-funded position and is currently funded through March 31, 2027. Employment beyond this date is contingent upon the availability of continued grant funding.

Work Schedule: Full time, Monday - Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm, 35 hours per week, availability to occasionally work evening or weekend hours
