National Salvage & Service Corporation – Fuel Yard
Location: Birmingham, Alabama
Position Type: Full-Time | Exempt | On-Site

National Salvage & Service Corporation is an industry-leading railroad contractor serving customers across the United States. We are seeking a motivated and experienced Wood Yard Manager to lead operations at our Wood Processing Facility in Birmingham, Alabama. Position Summary

The Wood Yard Manager is responsible for overseeing all daily operations of the wood processing facility, including production management, employee leadership, quality assurance, financial oversight, and operational efficiency. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership abilities, operational expertise, and a commitment to safety, continuous improvement, and customer satisfaction.

Essential Job Functions

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead, develop, and manage production teams while fostering a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Promote employee engagement, accountability, and professional development.
  • Build strong working relationships across departments and with external partners.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Collaborate with leadership and operational teams to achieve company objectives.
  • Build consensus and maintain strong customer and vendor relationships.

Operational & Production Management

  • Direct daily production operations and personnel scheduling.
  • Coordinate logistics and workflow to maximize efficiency and productivity.
  • Monitor facility performance and implement operational improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, safety procedures, and operational standards.

Financial & Administrative Oversight

  • Oversee budgeting, cost control, capital expenditures, and financial performance.
  • Maintain accurate operational records, files, and reports.
  • Manage confidential business information responsibly.

Quality Assurance & Continuous Improvement

  • Ensure product quality consistently meets established standards.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities and implement effective solutions.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives throughout the facility.

Mechanical Troubleshooting

  • Perform basic mechanical troubleshooting and coordinate repairs or maintenance as necessary.
  • Support operational uptime and equipment reliability.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Operations Management, Engineering, or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of management experience in manufacturing, processing, railroad, or related industrial environments.
  • Proven leadership experience with the ability to motivate and manage diverse teams.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Experience with budgeting, financial oversight, and operational reporting.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a detail-oriented mindset.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance practices and process improvement methodologies.
  • Basic mechanical troubleshooting and operational equipment knowledge preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, bend, and twist throughout the workday.
  • Ability to perform repetitive hand motions and repeated movements.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to walk on uneven terrain and move throughout an active industrial environment.
