What is WMS implementation?

WMS implementation refers to the process of deploying a Warehouse Management System (WMS) within an organization to manage warehouse operations more efficiently. This process includes selecting the right WMS software, configuring it to meet business requirements, integrating it with existing systems, and training staff. The goal of WMS implementation is to improve inventory accuracy, streamline workflows, and enhance overall warehouse productivity. Successful implementation can lead to reduced costs, better customer service, and improved inventory control.

What are some common challenges faced during a WMS implementation, and how can they be addressed?

A common challenge during a WMS (Warehouse Management System) implementation is ensuring seamless integration with existing systems, such as ERP or inventory platforms. Misalignment in data formats or workflows can lead to delays or errors. Another frequent hurdle is change management, as warehouse staff need adequate training and support to adapt to new processes. Proactive communication, thorough testing, and phased rollouts can help mitigate risks and make the transition smoother for all stakeholders involved.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in WMS implementation, and why are they important?

To thrive in WMS (Warehouse Management System) Implementation, you need a solid understanding of supply chain processes, warehouse operations, and relevant IT or logistics degrees or certifications. Familiarity with leading WMS software (such as SAP EWM, Manhattan, or Oracle), project management tools, and integration platforms is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help manage cross-functional teams and client expectations. These skills are crucial for ensuring smooth system deployment, minimizing disruptions, and optimizing warehouse efficiency.

Position Summary

For over a century, Victaulic has been the global leader in mechanical pipe-joining solutions - trusted on the world's most critical infrastructure projects. Our distribution operations are the engine behind that reputation, and we're looking for a Warehouse Shift Supervisor who's ready to run the position floor. You'll own daily warehouse operations end to end: leading a team of associates, managing inbound and outbound shipping, coordinating cross-dock and yard operations, and driving the accuracy and speed our customers count on. If you thrive on building high-performing teams, solving real-time logistics challenges, and pushing for continuous improvement in a fast-paced environment, this is your opportunity to make a measurable impact at a company that values operational excellence as much as you do.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise all warehouse, shipping, and receiving activities during assigned shifts
  • Oversee inbound, outbound, and cross-dock operations to meet customer and branch delivery requirements
  • Plan and manage shipping schedules, trailer flow, and dock capacity
  • Coordinate domestic and export freight routing and manage carrier relationships
  • Oversee yard operations to ensure safety, organization, and efficient trailer movement
  • Lead, coach, and develop warehouse associates - assigning daily work and balancing labor to workload
  • Conduct shift-start meetings to communicate priorities, safety initiatives, and expectations
  • Train new hires and reinforce standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Partner with management and HR on performance management and corrective actions
  • Enforce OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and PPE requirements
  • Proactively identify and address unsafe conditions and equipment issues
  • Verify bills of lading (BOL), export documentation, and U.S. Customs compliance
  • Ensure accuracy of shipments, receipts, and all inventory transactions
  • Conduct cycle counts and investigate and resolve inventory discrepancies
  • Track and report KPIs including productivity, accuracy, attendance, and safety
  • Identify and implement process improvements aligned with Lean and 5S principles

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; Associate degree preferred
  • 3-5 years of warehouse or distribution center experience
  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience strongly preferred
  • Working knowledge of shipping, receiving, inventory control, and material handling equipment
  • Experience with warehouse management systems (WMS) and basic computer applications
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
  • High attention to detail with a focus on accuracy and compliance
  • Flexibility to work varying schedules, including evenings and weekends as needed
