A Wine Steward, also known as a sommelier, is a trained and knowledgeable wine professional typically working in fine dining restaurants. Their main responsibilities include creating and managing the wine list, advising guests on wine pairings, and serving wine in accordance with established standards. Wine Stewards also work closely with chefs to ensure that the wines offered complement the menu. They may also train staff on wine service and handle wine procurement and storage. This role requires a deep understanding of wine varieties, regions, tasting techniques, and customer service.

What is a wine steward?

A wine steward, also called a sommelier, is a restaurant professional whose sole responsibility is to keep track of and maintain the wine supply. Your job duties can also entail organizing a wine cellar and giving customers advice on what wine they should pair with their food, as certain types of wine pair best with certain meats or cheeses. You are usually employed at more expensive restaurants. To be a good wine steward, you need to be well-versed in tasting wine and be an expert in the wines being served.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a wine steward?

To thrive as a Wine Steward, you need comprehensive wine knowledge, experience in food and beverage service, and often a certification such as a sommelier credential. Familiarity with wine inventory systems, POS software, and wine preservation tools is typically required. Exceptional communication, customer service, and sales skills help you create memorable guest experiences and guide wine selections. These abilities ensure guests receive expert recommendations, enhance overall dining satisfaction, and contribute to increased sales and restaurant reputation.

What are some common challenges faced by a wine steward when curating a wine list for a restaurant?
