Job description

Summary The Whatcom County Assessor's Office is looking to hire an experienced, certified Appraiser to assist with appraisal inspections. Anticipated duties may include, but are not limited to: Conducting exterior inspections of assigned houses, multifamily dwellings, buildings, and manufactured homes. Determining building classification, condition/ effective age, and calculating square footage.

Documents features that impact market value. Conducting inspections of urban and rural land, both developed and undeveloped. Inspects properties according to factors affecting value.

Interviewing owners, occupants, buyers, sellers, agents and neighbors for information that may influence values. Collecting permits for new residential structures, locates and visits sites, measuring structures and diagrams building footprints, taking photographs, identifying factors influencing values and confirming permit information and square footage as necessary. Length of Position: This position is anticipated to work up to 40 hours per week for 2-3 months, starting in June 2026.

Actual hours may vary dependent on candidate's availability and available workload. It is possible on-going part-time work may be available after the initial 2-3 month assignment, not to exceed 69 hours per month. Extension of the assignment will be dependent on candidate's interest and work available.

Requires one or more of the following: Washington State Department of Licensing (WA DOL) Real Estate Appraiser Certification Washington State Department of Licensing (WA DOL) Real Estate Appraiser License Washington State Department of Revenue (WSDOR) Accreditation Requires knowledge of: Appraisal and assessment principles, practices, functions and procedures: cost and market methods of appraising, and various appraising techniques. Building construction costs, materials and quality; building codes and restrictions and engineering requirements as related to building components and various types of construction for residential and business purposes

Land use impacts resulting from associated federal, state and local regulation and ordinance and basic laws related to property ownership and zoning. Mobile device and computer operation including word processing, spreadsheet, database and other applications related to the area of assignment. Requires the ability to: Write concisely and correctly and organize information clearly.

Evaluate priorities and independently address assigned appraisal matters, inquiries and complaints. Prioritize and plan work activities using resources effectively. Maintain accurate and organized records, databases, systems and files.
