What does a well engineering manager do?

A Well Engineering Manager is responsible for overseeing the planning, design, and execution of drilling and completion operations for oil and gas wells. They manage multidisciplinary teams, ensure safety and environmental standards are met, and work to optimize costs and efficiency. Additionally, they collaborate with geologists, reservoir engineers, and contractors to ensure that wells are drilled according to technical and regulatory requirements. Their role is critical in minimizing operational risks and delivering successful well projects on time and within budget.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a well engineering manager?

To thrive as a Well Engineering Manager, you need a strong background in petroleum engineering, well design, and drilling operations, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and substantial industry experience. Familiarity with well planning software (such as Landmark or WellCat), knowledge of industry standards, and certifications like IWCF or Well Control are commonly required. Exceptional leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help you effectively manage multidisciplinary teams and complex projects.
