Well Engineering Manager information

What does a well engineering manager do?

A Well Engineering Manager is responsible for overseeing the planning, design, and execution of drilling and completion operations for oil and gas wells. They manage multidisciplinary teams, ensure safety and environmental standards are met, and work to optimize costs and efficiency. Additionally, they collaborate with geologists, reservoir engineers, and contractors to ensure that wells are drilled according to technical and regulatory requirements. Their role is critical in minimizing operational risks and delivering successful well projects on time and within budget.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a well engineering manager?

To thrive as a Well Engineering Manager, you need a strong background in petroleum engineering, well design, and drilling operations, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and substantial industry experience. Familiarity with well planning software (such as Landmark or WellCat), knowledge of industry standards, and certifications like IWCF or Well Control are commonly required. Exceptional leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help you effectively manage multidisciplinary teams and complex projects. These skills and qualifications are vital to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective well delivery while minimizing operational risks.

What are the main challenges a well engineering manager faces when overseeing multiple drilling projects simultaneously?

A Well Engineering Manager often manages several drilling projects at different stages, which requires strong organizational and communication skills. Common challenges include coordinating diverse teams, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations, and managing unexpected technical issues or delays. Balancing project budgets and timelines while maintaining high operational standards is also critical. Effective delegation, regular status updates, and close collaboration with geologists, drilling engineers, and field personnel help mitigate these challenges.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the Manufacturing Engineering function, including process planning, equipment selection, and process support for new product launches and volume production.

  • Drive process improvement, capacity enhancement, and efficiency initiatives to improve plant safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness.

  • Manage and develop the Manufacturing Engineering department, coordinating with other departments and ensuring technical documentation approval.

Job description

About the role
Project North PES is Pangeo's new aluminum die casting and machining plant in Vaughan, Ontario. As Engineering Manager, you lead the Manufacturing Engineering function and carry full accountability for its performance, from new-product process planning and equipment selection through volume-production process improvement.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role through start-up and ramp. You'll plan process routes, tooling, and fixtures, provide the process support that new launches and running production need, and drive efficiency, cost, safety, and quality through engineering. Given the role's urgency within Project North, you may start ahead of full plant relocation and travel to China for technical training during equipment transfer.
Responsibilities
New-product process planning and technical development
  • Plan and determine new-product process routes, equipment selection, and tooling/fixture design concepts to support product development and volume production.
  • Provide process engineering support and technical problem-solving for new product launches and running production programs.
  • Lead the research and application of new process technologies and build internal technical capability.
  • Provide technical support for product quotations and new-process development.
Process improvement and productivity
  • Lead process improvement and capacity enhancement for volume production, improving plant efficiency, cost, safety, and quality through engineering initiatives.
  • Plan and drive improvements to the production process and overall equipment effectiveness.
  • Provide technical leadership for continuous improvement of process technology across all programs.
Department leadership
  • Plan and manage the Manufacturing Engineering department for well-organized, high-performing operations.
  • Coordinate engineering with Production, Quality, Equipment/Maintenance, and Purchasing to support plant objectives.
  • Approve the release of technical project documentation.
  • Develop and mentor engineering talent within the department.
Quality, health, and safety
  • Apply and enforce IATF 16949 requirements within engineering processes.
  • Support the plant's ISO 14001 environmental management system in day-to-day work.
  • Resolve die casting, machining, and related technical and quality issues promptly.
  • Ensure engineering staff complete WHMIS and OHSA training and follow safety procedures.
What we're looking for
  • Process depth. You own process routes, equipment selection, and tooling for die casting and machining.
  • Improvement drive. You raise efficiency, cost, safety, and quality through engineering, not workaround.
  • Technical leadership. You solve hard problems and build capability in the team.
  • Cross-functional fluency. You partner naturally with production, quality, and maintenance.
  • Start-up readiness. You stay effective in a fast-moving plant start-up.
Qualifications
  • 3+ years of technical management experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Diploma or degree in Casting/Foundry Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Substantial hands-on experience with aluminum/non-ferrous die casting process technology and tooling design; machining process experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of IATF 16949; P.Eng. designation an asset.
  • Microsoft 365 and engineering/CAD software proficiency.
  • English required, Mandarin an asset.
Illustrative KPIs
Examples of how success is measured in this role:
  • Launch: process readiness and PPAP support for new programs on time.
  • Efficiency: overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) and productivity gains.
  • Cost: process-driven cost reductions delivered.
  • Quality: die casting and machining defect reduction.
  • Safety: engineering-led safety improvements implemented.
Working conditions
  • On-site at the Vaughan, Ontario plant, with regular time on the production floor.
  • Standard business hours, with flexibility required during plant start-up.
  • Periodic travel, including training assignments in China during equipment transfer.
Equal opportunity & accessibility
Pangeo Group is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applications from all qualified candidates regardless of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, marital status, family status, or disability.
