How much do well control jobs pay per hour?
What is a well control?
A Well Control job involves managing and preventing uncontrolled releases of formation fluids during drilling, completion, or workover operations. Professionals in this field use specialized equipment and techniques to maintain wellbore stability and ensure operational safety. Their responsibilities include monitoring pressure, detecting kicks, and implementing well control procedures to prevent blowouts. Well Control specialists work closely with drilling teams to ensure compliance with safety regulations and industry standards.
What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in well control?
Professionals in Well Control are tasked with continuously monitoring well pressures, analyzing drilling parameters, and responding swiftly to any signs of instability or well influx. They oversee the implementation of safe drilling practices, manage blowout preventer (BOP) systems, and conduct regular well control drills with the team. Collaboration is key, as Well Control specialists frequently coordinate with drilling engineers, rig operators, and safety personnel to ensure well integrity and prevent incidents. Their daily role is dynamic and involves both hands-on technical tasks and critical decision-making to keep drilling operations safe and efficient.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the well control position, and why are they important?
To thrive in Well Control, you need in-depth knowledge of drilling operations, pressure control techniques, and oil and gas well behavior, often supported by relevant industry certifications such as IWCF or IADC Well Control. Expertise with well monitoring systems, blowout preventers (BOP), and real-time data analysis tools is crucial for effective response and prevention. Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and clear communication skills help you collaborate and act rapidly under pressure. These competencies are essential to maintaining safety, minimizing risk, and ensuring operational continuity in complex and potentially hazardous drilling environments.

Experience the challenges, rewards and opportunity of working for one of the world's largest providers of products and services to the global energy industry.

Working under direct supervision at Level II and progressing to greater autonomy at higher levels, this role supports rapid-response deployment teams in stabilizing high-risk well conditions while ensuring strict adherence to safety, regulatory, and operational standards.
This position requires the ability to operate effectively in hazardous, high-pressure, high-temperature environments, including exposure to fire, gas releases, heavy equipment, loud noise, and dynamic emergency conditions. The role demands physical resilience, strong situational awareness, and strict adherence to HSE protocols.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide on-site consulting and technical execution support during well control events, including blowout containment, well-kill operations, fire suppression, and emergency response procedures.
- Assist in planning and executing complex well intervention strategies under extreme operating conditions.
- Monitor and coordinate well-site activities to ensure compliance with company procedures, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Advise customers and government representatives on response strategies and technical considerations.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot specialized well control and firefighting equipment.
- Assess dynamic well conditions and recommend corrective technical actions.
- Participate in pre-job planning, risk assessments, and post-event reporting.
- Maintain professional relationships with regulators, inspectors, customers, and internal teams.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives, lessons learned documentation, and equipment readiness programs.
- Travel globally and mobilize on short notice as required.
- Undergraduate degree in Engineering, Geoscience, Geology, or related discipline preferred, or equivalent combination of education and field experience.
- Minimum 7+ years of well site operations experience, including drilling, intervention, or well control exposure.
- Experience working in hazardous, high-pressure/high-temperature environments.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to operate specialized intervention equipment.
- Excellent problem-solving ability under pressure.
- Strong communication skills and ability to interface with customers, regulators, and cross-functional teams.
- Ability to travel extensively, including international assignments.
Candidates with qualifications exceeding the minimum job requirements will be considered for higher-level positions based on their experience, additional job requirements, and current business needs. Depending on their education, experience, and skill level, candidates may be eligible for a range of job opportunities, including positions ranging from Well Control Specialist II, Well Control Specialist III to Well Control Specialist IV.
