Job description

Must be open to filling in on weekend, 2nd, and 3rd shifts!
Position Summary
The Milieu Specialist will promote a therapeutic environment that is trauma-informed and recovery-oriented. The Milieu Specialist will de-escalate crisis situations, teach coping strategies, and provide input into planning.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Incorporates the six principles of trauma informed care throughout all aspects of their work.
  • Serves as the clinical support resource person to clients/families
  • Promotes an environment that supports a fundamental respect for all individuals, that enhances the client's overall experience and provides a safe and respectful person-centered model of care.
  • Facilitates interpersonal competencies such as learning adaptive coping, interaction, and relationship skills.
  • Promotes a calm milieu by providing individual support to clients/families.
  • Actively manage the milieu through interactions with individual clients on a regular/frequent basis.
  • Functions as a role model for clients in crisis to show ways to effectively relate to others, to get one's needs met, to enhance/develop social competencies and interpersonal awareness; serves as a resource and point of contact for information, guidance, and support for clients.
  • Works in collaboration with staff and the treatment team; communicates in a warm and empathetic manner.
  • Ensures a compassionate, high quality, exemplary customer driven and trauma informed culture; validate the client's needs and rights.
  • Is mindful of times of increased activity or stress in the milieu to prevent escalation.
  • Redirecst unhealthy/risky behaviors on the spot by giving feedback and alternative strategies, de-escalate clients and in emergencies provide appropriate crisis intervention techniques to maintain clients in a least restricting manner.
  • Completes all agency documentation according to agency policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
  • Associate degree in social work, psychology, or other mental health related field preferred; High School Diploma with experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Knowledge of and experience with crisis de-escalation, crisis/safety planning, and first aid.
  • Knowledge of integrated care.
  • Knowledge of social determinants of health.
  • Skills in advocacy, organization, and communication.
  • Knowledge of local resources and supports.
  • Ability to effectively manage a crisis and link to necessary supports and services.
  • ASIST Training
  • Handle with Care training
  • QPR/Mental Health First Aid.
  • Willingness to travel as needed and work with clients, their families and supports in crisis.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
