Work EnvironmentRoasting facilities, production-focusedCoffee shops, customer-facing
Industry UsageCoffee roasting companies, specialty coffee brandsCoffee shops, cafes

Weekend Roasters focus on roasting coffee beans, often working in production environments, while Baristas prepare coffee drinks directly for customers in retail settings. Both roles require coffee knowledge, but their daily tasks and work environments differ significantly.

What is the 3 month rule for jobs?

The 3 month rule for a Weekend Roaster position typically refers to a probationary period of three months, during which performance and fit are evaluated before offering permanent employment or benefits. This period allows both employer and employee to assess suitability for the role, which often involves skills like roasting, quality control, and equipment handling. After three months, employees may become eligible for full benefits or continued employment based on performance.

Can you make money as a coffee roaster?

A weekend roaster can earn income depending on factors such as experience, scale of operation, and market demand. Many roasters supplement their income through sales of roasted coffee, wholesale accounts, or participating in local markets. Profitability varies widely and often requires building a customer base and managing costs effectively.

What jobs pay 4000 a week without a degree?

A Weekend Roaster typically earns between $15 and $25 per hour, making it unlikely to reach $4,000 weekly without significant overtime or additional income sources. High-paying jobs that can reach $4,000 a week without a degree often include roles such as commercial truck drivers, sales managers, or skilled trades like electricians, which require experience, certifications, or specialized skills rather than formal degrees.

What is the best job to work on weekends?

A weekend roaster is a job that involves roasting coffee beans, often scheduled during weekends to meet demand. It requires knowledge of roasting equipment and techniques, and may involve working early mornings or late shifts to ensure fresh product availability.

The ideal candidate is passionate about coffee, highly organized, dependable, and comfortable working in a production-focused environment. This role requires both technical skill and a hands-on willingness to support the broader needs of the caf, wholesale, catering, and events business.
Key Responsibilities
  • Coffee Roasting and Production
  • Roast coffee according to established roast profiles, production schedules, and quality standards.
  • Monitor roast curves, development times, batch consistency, and post-roast results.
  • Operate, clean, and maintain roasting equipment safely and properly.
  • Track roast data, production notes, and batch information using roasting software or internal systems.
  • Support production roasting for caf use, retail bags, wholesale accounts, catering, events, and special projects.
Quality Control
  • Participate in regular cuppings, tastings, and quality checks to ensure consistency and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Evaluate green coffee, roasted coffee, and brewed coffee for flavor, quality, freshness, and defects.
  • Work with leadership to refine roast profiles, brewing standards, and product offerings.
  • Maintain high standards for freshness, storage, labeling, and product rotation.
Packaging and Fulfillment
  • Package roasted coffee for retail, wholesale, catering, and internal use.
  • Ensure bags are properly labeled, dated, sealed, and organized.
  • Prepare wholesale and internal coffee orders accurately and on time.
  • Coordinate with caf leadership, events teams, and wholesale clients to ensure coffee needs are met.
Inventory and Supply Management
  • Monitor green coffee, roasted coffee, packaging materials, labels, and production supplies.
  • Assist with inventory counts and communicate ordering needs in advance.
  • Receive, inspect, organize, and properly store green coffee and supplies.
  • Help control waste and ensure efficient use of coffee and materials.
Equipment and Workspace Care
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe roasting and production area.
  • Follow all food safety, workplace safety, and sanitation standards.
  • Perform regular cleaning and basic maintenance of roasting equipment, grinders, scales, bins, and production tools.
  • Report equipment issues, safety concerns, or quality problems promptly.
Team and Operational Support
  • Communicate clearly with caf managers, baristas, wholesale clients, and leadership regarding production needs.
  • Support training for baristas or team members on coffee knowledge, brewing standards, and product quality as needed.
  • Assist with coffee tastings, events, menu development, and special projects when needed.
  • Represent the coffee program with professionalism, care, and pride.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 12 years of coffee roasting experience preferred.
  • Experience operating commercial coffee roasting equipment preferred.
  • Familiarity with roast profiling, cupping, green coffee evaluation, and production roasting.
  • Experience with roasting software such as Cropster or similar systems is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of coffee sourcing, processing methods, brewing methods, and flavor development.
  • Ability to follow established systems while also offering thoughtful input for improvement.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and consistency.
  • Ability to work independently and manage a production schedule.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.
  • Strong communication skills and a team-first attitude.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Flexible availability, including early mornings, occasional weekends, and event support as needed.
Compensation
Competitive hourly wage or salary based on experience.
