Description:
The unit consists of 8 labor and delivery beds with 6 overflow beds.
There are 7 triage beds in the labor and delivery area.
The postpartum area has 40 beds for mother/baby care, antepartum, and GYN patients.
The unit averages 1800 to 2000 births per year.
Certifications required include BLS, ACLS, NRP, and AWHONN Advanced Fetal Monitoring.
Registered Nurses must be able to circulate during C-sections.
The typical nurse-patient ratio is 1:2 for labor, 1:1 for delivery, and 1:3 for triage in labor and delivery.
For mother/baby and postpartum, the ratio is 1:4 couplets.
Staff includes OB technicians who assist with C-section scrubbing and patient care in labor and delivery.
Weekend shifts are required every other weekend.
Holidays will be rotated with core staff.
Scrub color is provided for labor and delivery, while navy is worn for mother/baby and postpartum.
Telemetry capabilities may be present for mothers, but nurses are not responsible for monitoring strips.
Respiratory therapy and pharmacy services are available 24/7.
Shifts are scheduled from 0630 to 1900 and 1830 to 0700.
Floating to postpartum may be required as necessary.
Orientation will involve 1-2 shifts with a preceptor.
Common diagnoses include standard labor, multiples, high-risk pregnancies, vacuum-assisted deliveries, and VBACs.
The unit is designated as baby-friendly.
Registered Nurses, NICU nurses, and respiratory therapists attend C-sections.
Cancellations may occur up to 4 shifts during the 13-week assignment.
Charting is done using an electronic medical record system.
