Job description

The Pediatric Inpatient Surgical Care Unit is located at McMaster Children's Hospital Site of Hamilton Health Sciences. This inpatient unit provides acute tertiary and sub-specialty surgical care including pediatric trauma to children age 0-17. 3Y prides itself on a friendly and welcoming environment with an emphasis on the wellbeing and mentorship of our nurses. 3Y is a dynamic, fast-paced unit that is committed to investing in our nurses' professional growth and development with the goal of developing a community of specialized pediatric surgical nurses who will seamlessly provide care to our patients.

As a collaborative member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, the Registered Nurse will apply their clinical expertise of pediatric diseases requiring surgical management to provide comprehensive nursing care to children 0-17 years as outlined within the practice standards and guidelines by the College of Nurses of Ontario. Nurses are set up for success and go through a comprehensive onsite orientation program, led by experienced health care professionals and educators to build a foundation of surgical knowledge as well as create confidence to care for pediatric patients. 

  • Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse

  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification

  • Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS) certificate preferred or willing to complete within six (6) months from hire

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certificate preferred

  • A minimum of two (2) years of RN experience (within the last 2 years) in a tertiary care setting

  • Sound knowledge of pediatric illnesses, symptoms and related interventions

  • Demonstration of clinical expertise in pediatric psychosocial assessments, pediatric growth and development, critical thinking and problem solving

  • Demonstration and knowledge in the role of community liaison and access to supports for the children and families

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Demonstrated ability to be self-directed and also collaborative with a multidisciplinary team

  • Knowledge, skill and ability to provide health teaching for pediatric patients and their families, specific to the needs of the clinic population
