Overview:

The Shipper / Packer provides technical guidance to employees on the interpretation, application and modification of preservation, packaging and packing matters, to include processing criteria, procedures and techniques.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Resolves complex problems connected with preservation, packaging, and marking methods.
  • Blocks and braces a wide variety of military equipment and supplies.
  • Studies and analyzes the preservation, packaging, and packing program to assure program effectiveness.
  • Implement changes in packaging methods, requirement and procedures.
  • Establishes packaging standard operating procedures for the employees to follow.
  • Ensures that employees are provided updates and changes to packaging regulations to include hazardous packaging requirements.
  • Reviews packaging discrepancies and recommend ds appropriate corrective actions.
  • Recommends methods of preservation when guidance is not readily available from data systems.
  • Researches technical, performance, environmental and cost data on packing materials.
  • Read specifications and photographs as/if required in DLA contract.
  • Formal training of technical/certifiable aspects of packing and shipping hazardous material is required every two years.
  • Utilizes management policy, principles and practices in order to apply, interpret and implement packaging guidelines.
  • Knowledge of automated systems (e.g. DSS, HMIRS, FEDLOG, FLOS, JHCS, etc.).
  • Applies conventional fact-finding, analytical and problem solving methods and techniques to identify packing problems.
  • Analyze diverse and often vague data to determine trends, solve problems and recommend a course of action.
  • Keep abreast of and evaluate new developments pertaining to areas of responsibility to ensure that planning, approaches, findings and decisions will result in an efficient packaging/preservation process.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • There are no supervisory responsibilities associated with this position.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum one (1) year specific experience in material handling, supply, distribution, inspection, or related areas.
  • One year using woodshop tools, fabricating containers, framing construction, or preservation, packing, and packaging.
  • One year specific experience demonstrating ability to read blueprints, measure fabrication.
  • Experience identifying various materials for construction of wood containers.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Skill in operating materials handling equipment such as forklifts, tugs, stock selectors and other general purpose equipment to move items to or from storage locations.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite products including, Word, Excel, Access and Outlook software.
  • Demonstrate a good attitude and ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Ability to work effectively under a minimum of supervision.
  • Ability to multi-task efficiently, works in a fast paced environment on multiple projects, and has a strong attention for detail.

Work Environment:

Works in shop/warehouse environment. Work involves repetitive motions and standing for long periods of time. Work is of a physical nature and requires the incumbent be able to lift 50 lbs overhead and/or repetitively.
