What does a Weekend Manufacturing Software Engineer do?

A Weekend Manufacturing Software Engineer is responsible for developing, maintaining, and troubleshooting software systems that support manufacturing operations, specifically during weekend shifts. They ensure that production lines run smoothly by addressing any software issues, implementing updates, and optimizing automation processes. This role often requires close collaboration with production teams and maintenance staff to quickly resolve technical problems and minimize downtime during weekend operations.

What are the unique challenges faced by Weekend Manufacturing Software Engineers, and how does the weekend shift impact collaboration and project workflow?

Weekend Manufacturing Software Engineers often work with reduced on-site staff and may need to troubleshoot urgent software or automation issues independently, which can be both challenging and rewarding. Collaboration with weekday teams typically involves thorough documentation and regular handoffs to ensure continuity across shifts. Communication skills and adaptability are essential, as you'll frequently coordinate with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams remotely or asynchronously. This role offers exposure to fast-paced problem solving and can provide a pathway to leadership or weekday positions as you demonstrate reliability and initiative.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Manufacturing Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Manufacturing Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like C++, Python, or Java), knowledge of manufacturing processes, and a relevant engineering or computer science degree. Familiarity with industrial automation systems, PLCs, SCADA software, and version control tools like Git is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and effective communication are essential soft skills for diagnosing issues and collaborating with cross-functional teams during off-hours. These competencies ensure smooth and efficient manufacturing operations, minimize downtime, and support rapid troubleshooting in a 24/7 production environment.

Job description

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.
LEAD SOFTWARE ENGINEER, APPLICATION SOFTWARE (SILICON MANUFACTURING)
The application software team is the central nervous system of SpaceX - we create mission critical applications that are used throughout SpaceX to accelerate launch vehicle production and flight as well as systems that allow Starlink to grow into a worldwide fast, reliable Internet service.
Our team is currently creating and evolving systems to enable rapid build and reuse of Starship as well as designing the next generation manufacturing software that will be used in high throughput factories for Starlink. Other applications range from platforms that support concurrent streams of data from many always-on assets to manage the world's largest satellite constellation to public facing systems where customers can join our Starlink network globally. We work closely with engineers throughout the company to create and update our systems with respect to crewed launches, Starship flights, changes to the Starlink network and much more.
Aerospace experience is not required to be successful here - rather we look for smart, motivated, collaborative engineers who love solving problems and want to make an impact on a super inspiring mission. We are looking for a hands-on, creative, and driven Lead Software Engineer to spearhead the manufacturing systems for our internal advanced silicon lines.
As a Lead Software Engineer will be responsible for architecting and scaling the software systems tailored to wafer-level, chip-level, and panel-level packaging operations, helping to take them from concept to mass production as we scale the world's most advanced satellite constellation in the world.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead a software engineering team that architects and optimizes high-output factories of the future
  • Own all aspects, including delivery, of a specific technology roadmap
  • Set the bar for technical excellence across the team, and create opportunities for the team to continually improve
  • Recruit the best engineering talent to the team
  • Challenge the team to develop new processes and deploy entire factories rapidly with high machine reliability and safety standards
  • Collaborate closely with automation, mechanical, process, safety, production and maintenance leadership to identify high-impact projects and opportunities for improvement

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, math, or scientific discipline and 3+ years of software development experience; OR 6+ years of professional experience building software in lieu of a degree
  • 1+ years of experience leading software teams or projects

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Strong desire to mentor and grow employees
  • Programming experience in Python, C#, .NET, Go, Java, or similar object-oriented language
  • 4+ years of rigorous experience building full stack web applications
  • Semiconductor industry work including with SECS/GEM protocol
  • Familiarity with Manufacturing Execution Systems(MES)
  • Expertise in designing software systems
  • Expertise in testing and infrastructure
  • Expertise in profiling and improving application performance
  • Front-end experience in Angular, React, or similar JavaScript framework
  • Database experience with PostgreSQL, SQL Server, or similar database technologies
  • Able to collaborate across group and department lines with a wide range of engineers and managers
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals (object-oriented programming, networking, working in a team development environment)
  • Domain expertise in any of the following:
    • Manufacturing systems
    • Supply Chain systems
    • Warehouse Management systems

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be able to work extended hours and weekends as needed
