IT Infrastructure Engineer – Mainframe Systems Manager

Location: New York, NY 10001
Work Arrangement: Day 1 Onsite
Position Type: Full-Time
Hours: 35 hours per week

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Mainframe Systems Manager to provide technical leadership and management for a mainframe systems team supporting IBM mainframe environments, system software, program products, and related subsystems.

The ideal candidate will have extensive enterprise mainframe management experience, strong technical knowledge of IBM z/OS environments, and the ability to lead system programmers while overseeing daily operations, infrastructure upgrades, modernization initiatives, and critical technical projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage a team of mainframe system programmers, including workload distribution, scheduling, task delegation, performance management, and goal setting.
  • Oversee day-to-day mainframe systems operations and ensure effective monitoring, incident response, change management, and project intake.
  • Plan and coordinate upgrades for mainframe hardware and infrastructure components, including processors, DASD, VTS, and related systems.
  • Research, evaluate, and implement strategic technologies to modernize, optimize, and improve mainframe environments.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to system programming staff.
  • Coordinate team resources to successfully complete technical projects and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with internal departments, data center operations, technical support teams, external agencies, and other stakeholders.
  • Clearly document and communicate technical issues, risks, solutions, and project status.
  • Develop work plans, manage project timelines, and provide accurate progress updates.
  • Support team members in adopting new technologies and resolving complex technical issues.
  • Oversee infrastructure performance, availability, reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • Drive automation, performance tuning, workload optimization, and other modernization initiatives.
  • Support disaster recovery planning, testing, and execution activities.
  • Ensure adherence to organizational technical policies, standards, security requirements, and operational procedures.
  • Participate in after-hours, weekend, and emergency support activities when required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience working in mainframe management within a medium- to large-scale enterprise environment.
  • Strong technical expertise with IBM mainframe technologies, including:
    • z/OS
    • CICS
    • DB2
    • IMS
  • Experience with enterprise monitoring and performance tools such as OMEGAMON and SMF analytics.
  • Experience supporting disaster recovery planning, testing, and execution.
  • Knowledge of mainframe security frameworks and best practices.
  • Experience collaborating with storage, network, and data center operations teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead mainframe modernization initiatives, including automation, performance optimization, and workload management.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to independently research and resolve complex technical issues.
  • Ability to work effectively with technical teams, management, vendors, and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Willingness to work after hours, weekends, and provide 24/7 availability or responsiveness when required.
Minimum Qualification Requirements

Candidates must meet one of the following qualification pathways:

  1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, plus four years of satisfactory full-time experience related to data center engineering and operations, cloud engineering and operations, or complex IT infrastructure engineering.

OR

  1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university plus eight years of satisfactory full-time experience related to data center engineering and operations, cloud engineering and operations, or complex IT infrastructure engineering.

OR

  1. A combination of education and/or experience equivalent to the qualifications listed above.
Additional Requirements
  • Strong ability to manage competing priorities in a complex enterprise environment.
  • Excellent technical documentation and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead teams through infrastructure changes, upgrades, and modernization initiatives.
  • Ability to work onsite from Day 1 in New York, NY.
  • Flexibility to provide after-hours and emergency support when required.
