Job Summary:
This role, under the general supervision of the Supervisor, Manager or Laboratory Director, permits the Medical Laboratory Technician to perform tests requiring limited skill and responsibility and exercise independent judgment minimally, as competency is demonstrated.
  • Accuracy: Maintains acceptable accuracy in-patient, quality assurance, proficiency and competency testing.
  • Critical Thinking: Uses clinical/theoretical knowledge to analyze, investigate, interpret and report lab data.
  • Job Knowledge: Maintains current personal training, education and practice of policies and procedures.
  • Productivity: Practices organizational skills for efficient of time, materials, cost and availability of lab data.
  • Communication: Practices information monitoring, investigation, resolution and hand-off to team members.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Maintains acceptable accuracy in patient, quality assurance, proficiency and competency testing.
  • Meets department standard for correct patient or specimen identification
  • Meets department standard for error rate in testing or reporting patient or QC results
  • Consistently documents investigation and correct interpretation of QA failures or trends
  • Earns acceptable scores in proficiency testing and personnel competency testing
  • Maintains instrumentation for testing

Uses clinical/theoretical knowledge to analyze, investigate, interpret and report lab data
  • Reports lab data accurately and in a timely manner
  • Recognizes the relationship between lab data and clinical findings or expectation
  • Initiates investigation of problems and works to resolution
  • Interprets information from multiple sources

Practices information monitoring, investigation, resolution and hand-off to team members.
  • Complies with Pending Log procedure for tracking laboratory test status
  • Documents in the LIS all elements of the Notification Value Call procedure
  • Hands-off information to others according to the department procedure and chain of command
  • Adheres to WellStar's Standards of Behavior in a consistent fashion
  • Takes personal responsibility for correction action on constructive criticism.

Practices organizational skills for efficiency of time, materials, cost and completing testing.
  • Meets deadlines for turn-around times required by the department
  • Meets department-defined standards for organizational skills
  • Meets department productivity standards
  • Practices cost-efficient work processes that maintain high quality laboratory data.
  • Maintains current personal training, education and practice of policies and procedures

Maintains current knowledge and practice of WellStar Policies and procedures, including LIS.
  • Demonstrates adequate knowledge of laboratory regulatory compliance
  • Practices all WellStar and Laboratory Safety Standards
  • Participates in meetings, committees, task forces and project teams
  • Completes monthly, quarterly, or yearly educational requirements.

Required Minimum Education:
  • Associates Medical Technology or Other / Certificate Medical Technology

Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):
All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.
  • MLT(AAB) - Medical Laboratory Technician or MLT(AMT) - Medical Laboratory Technician or MLT(ASCP) - Medical Laboratory Technician

Additional License(s) and Certification(s):
  • For persons who possess the technician qualifications and have recently moved into the state or completed the academic and/or training requirements, they may be temporarily classified once as technicians within 18 months.

Required Minimum Experience:
  • Minimum 1 year experience laboratory experience Preferred.
