Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

Works in the dock carpenter department and assigned to other departments to assist with other labor and helper requirements. As well as supplement manpower assistance to complete assigned tasks.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Works under the direction of department supervisor or group leader and receives job training from department supervisor.
  2. Performs assigned helper jobs such as vessel jobs such as clean up, Climbs in and out of tanks for cleaning purposes, or if qualified fire watch for hot work being performed by tradesmen, pick up unused equipment and hoses, welding leads, etc., upon completion of jobs.
  3. When a regular vacancy occurs in higher labor/helper grades, supervisors may draw from employees in the labor/helper pool who have shown adaptability to their work and successful job performance.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodation may be provided to enable individuals to perform the essential functions.

Education and Experience:

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent.
  2. Experience in a Shipyard/ Military setting.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Work in overhead structures and around beneath machinery.
  2. Additionally, injury exposure could be severe, cuts and bruises; considerable physical effort of hands and arms are required.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Work is regularly performed in outside weather conditions, including rain and extreme heat, near moving mechanical parts and includes occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions and to vibration.
