Job description

Position Summary
(Seasonal Salaried, Benefitted Position)The Ski Patrol Director is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and strategic direction of the ski patrol department. This role ensures the safety of guests and staff through effective emergency response, risk management, training, and operational oversight. The Director develops patrol staff, maintains compliance with all applicable regulations, and collaborates across departments to support efficient mountain operations.
Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee departmental budgeting, equipment procurement/maintenance, and required records and reporting
  • Lead all aspects of staffing, including hiring, training, scheduling, performance management, and development of patrol supervisors and staff
  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and guest service through coaching and regular evaluations
  • Oversee on-mountain emergency medical care, rescue operations, and lift evacuations, ensuring timely and effective response
  • Maintain high standards of patient care, documentation, and coordination with external emergency services
  • Manage hazard identification and mitigation, incident reporting, and accident investigations
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, policies, and industry standards
  • Develop and administer training programs, certifications, and drills to maintain operational readiness and staff competency
  • Partner with Lift Operations, Mountain Operations, and other departments on daily planning, terrain management, and safe mountain operations
Qualifications
  • Current Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) certification or higher (EMT, Paramedic preferred)
  • Significant ski patrol experience, including leadership roles
  • Strong knowledge of mountain safety practices, aerial lift evacuations, explosives handling, avalanche mediation, rescue techniques, and risk management
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to ski/snowboard at an expert level in all terrain and conditions
Preferred
  • Avalanche certification (e.g., Level 1 or higher)
  • Experience managing budgets and teams in a resort setting
  • Instructor or trainer certification
Work Environment
  • Majority of time spent outdoors in alpine conditions, including extreme weather
  • Physically demanding role requiring skiing/riding, lifting, and emergency response activities
  • Variable schedule including weekends, holidays, and extended hours during peak operations
  • Frequent exposure to high-risk situations requiring quick decision-making
