Overview

The Atlantic is hiring a senior editor to join the newsroom’s Political Accountability and National Security team. This editor will oversee staff writers and work closely with the team’s other editors to produce stories that lead the national conversation. The senior editor may specialize in areas of politics, policy, or national security and will be instrumental in shaping The Atlantic’s coverage of issues such as intelligence, the justice system, foreign affairs, the military, U.S. elections, domestic policy, and the politics of AI. This position is for a journalist with exceptional vision and judgment. The ideal candidate will manage ambitious reporters and nurture groundbreaking stories from idea to publication, operating at all altitudes in the editorial process, delivering scoops fast and shaping major investigations.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee staff writers and collaborate with other editors to produce leading national stories.
  • Specialize in politics, policy, or national security to shape coverage of intelligence, justice, foreign affairs, the military, elections, domestic policy, and AI politics.
  • Manage ambitious reporters and nurture groundbreaking stories from idea to publication.
  • Operate at all altitudes in the editorial process, moving fast to deliver scoops and go deep to shape major investigations.
  • Work at the required times, including nights, early mornings, and weekends.

  • 10+ years of experience with a demonstrated ability to define the conversation around issues of national importance.
