About Your Role
Cincinnati Public Radio is seeking a Deputy News Editor who will also serve as the digital lead in the news department. The Deputy News editor will work closely with the VP of News to develop and carry out news strategy. Will serve as afternoon assignment editor. Will also work closely with VP of Digital strategy and audience growth. Will serve as back up News Director in News Directorโ€™s absence.
As Deputy News Editor, Digital amp; Broadcast, you will play a central role in shaping Cincinnati Public Radioโ€™s daily news coverage across both broadcast and digital platforms. This is a hands-on position responsible for guiding editorial decisions, supporting reporters, and ensuring content meets the highest standards of accuracy, clarity, and impact.
In addition to your editorial leadership, youโ€™ll drive WVXUโ€™s digital presenceโ€”editing and optimizing stories for the web, leveraging analytics and audience insights, and collaborating with staff to create engaging, multimedia storytelling. Youโ€™ll also explore new tools and technologies to enhance how audiences experience our journalism.
What You'll Do
Deputy Editor Responsibilities
  • Edit and coordination of afternoon assignments from reporters, typically between 2pm and 6pm weekdays with occasional evening and weekend editing, as needed
  • Provide support and guidance for reporters, and assist with onboarding new hires
  • Create and maintain style guides
  • Serve as news director in their absence
  • Writing for web, as time allows
  • Handle WVXU submissions for awards
  • On call during breaking news events
Digital Editor Responsibilities
  • Update the WVXU website throughout the day, also, edit reporters' stories for the web. Youโ€™ll use digital tools for data, audio, and visual effects and analytics and best practices to make stories attractive to digital users
  • Collaborate with newsroom staff to adapt stories for web using best practices
  • Training and assisting newsroom staff on best practices, as needed
  • Work with newsroom staff to adapt and create original content for the web
  • Explore new technologies and improve use of current technologies
  • Ensure news content on all digital platforms meets the organization's editorial standards
  • Prepare The Daily View newsletter for weekday distribution
Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Work with the digital department on audience development, best practices, optimization, etc. of news content
  • Work with the social media coordinator to increase and enhance WVXU's social media presence on current and emerging platforms such as Instagram, Tik Tok, YouTube etc.
  • Create multimedia presentations using photos, video, graphics, data visualization tools etc.
  • Take on other projects and duties as assigned
