What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Content Moderator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Content Moderator, you need strong attention to detail, critical thinking, and familiarity with content policies, often supported by prior experience in moderation or customer service. Proficiency with content management systems, moderation queues, and reporting tools is typically required. Excellent judgment, resilience, and effective communication are standout soft skills for handling sensitive material and engaging with users or teams. These skills ensure that online platforms remain safe, respectful, and compliant with community standards, especially during high-traffic weekend periods.

What are some common challenges faced by weekend content moderators, and how can they effectively address them?

Weekend content moderators often encounter higher volumes of user activity and urgent moderation needs, as online communities tend to be more active outside of standard business hours. This can mean handling a surge in reported content and making quick, accurate decisions to maintain community standards. To address these challenges, moderators should be comfortable prioritizing cases based on severity, utilize moderation tools efficiently, and communicate regularly with team members or supervisors for support. Staying updated on platform policies and participating in ongoing training can also help moderators handle complex situations confidently.

What is weekend content moderation?

Weekend content moderation involves reviewing and managing user-generated content on websites, social media platforms, or online communities specifically during weekends. Moderators ensure that content complies with community guidelines, removing inappropriate or harmful posts and addressing reports from users. This role is essential for maintaining a safe and positive online environment, particularly during peak traffic times when regular weekday staff may not be available. Weekend content moderators may work remotely or onsite and often need strong communication and decision-making skills.

Job description

Snap Inc (https://www.snap.com/en-US/) is a technology company. We believe the camera presents the greatest opportunity to improve the way people live and communicate. Snap contributes to human progress by empowering people to express themselves, live in the moment, learn about the world, and have fun together. The Company's three core products are Snapchat (https://www.snapchat.com/) , a visual messaging app that enhances your relationships with friends, family, and the world; Lens Studio (https://ar.snap.com/lens-studio) , an augmented reality platform that powers AR across Snapchat and other services; and its AR glasses, Spectacles (https://www.spectacles.com/) .

The Trust & Safety (T&S) Team plays an important role in protecting our Snapchatters from content that violates our terms of service or Community Guidelines - while constantly embodying our values of Kind, Smart, and Creative. The T&S team helps create a safe platform experience so that all of our users around the world are empowered to enjoy their experience on our platform, every day. We take great pride in our work as digital first responders and hope you would consider joining us.

We're looking for a Lead to join Team Snap's growing Proactive Trust & Safety Operations team! You will be expected to conduct deep dive investigations into violations of our Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and to flex in to support the larger T&S team as needed. We are looking for someone who is able to keep a cool head under pressure and is excited about owning projects from start to finish. You will work cross-functionally with our Public Policy, Product, Legal and Engineering teams, build and improve processes, and take a hands-on, innovative approach to helping keep Snapchatters safe.

What you'll do:

  • Identify trends and patterns by reviewing, analyzing and synthesizing information from internal and external sources, and propose safety solutions informed by these findings

  • Become a subject matter expert in a range of abuse areas, including those involving sensitive content such as child sexual exploitation

  • Conduct thorough and objective investigations into violations of our Community Guidelines and Terms of Service

  • Support ad hoc safety-related projects in accordance with business needs

  • Anticipate project risks, negotiate with decision makers, and balance business needs with technical constraints

  • Develop and conduct training for other T&S team members

  • Enhance team's work through recommendations for optimizing tooling as well as process development and improvement

  • Ensure that new product and workflow launches are properly planned for and supported

  • Work with internal stakeholders to make sure Proactive Trust & Safety priorities are communicated clearly and backed up by strong data

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Comfort working within a content moderation environment

  • Ability to problem solve, both independently and with peers, and to structure ambiguous business challenges into actionable plans

  • Strong analytical skills, including working with large, complex data sets to solve business problems, and providing actionable business insights via data visualization software (Advanced Excel/Sheets, Looker, Grafana, etc.)

  • Experience using data querying languages, including SQL, to support investigative work

  • Background working effectively with cross-functional teams and management

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and ability to communicate effectively and appropriately within all levels of the organization

  • Ability to prioritize, focus and thrive in a dynamic work environment, and to adapt to evolving business needs

  • Process driven individual with a proven track record of developing and implementing new processes and identifying opportunities to improve or build on existing processes

  • Great judgment and excellent leadership skills

  • Experience investigating criminality or abuse, on or off-line

  • Experience working with product and engineering teams to develop tools and solutions that improve trust across a platform or product

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience

  • 5+ years of experience working in technology, safety, or a related field

  • Flexible work-hours: full-time and weekends as needed

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1+ year(s) of people management experience
