We are a full-service, heavy civil and industrial contractor building critical infrastructure, including highways, bridges, mines, dams, rail, and more. Our teams take on challenging projects that keep communities safe, supply chains moving, and the country connected.
At Ames, we are Fueled by Family and Driven by Ownership. That means we look out for one another, take pride in what we build, and take responsibility for our actions, our results, and the long-term health of the company.
Guided by our core values of People, Team, Our Bond, Persistence, and Vision, we do what we say we will do, push through challenges and deliver work we're proud of.
When you join Ames, you're joining a company built for long-term success - where skilled people, strong teams, and disciplined execution come together to build careers and a better future.
The Project Engineer is experienced in heavy highway and civil construction projects and will manage the technical, financial, and operational aspects of civil infrastructure projects (roadways, bridges, and earthworks). In this role, the Project Engineer will bridge the gap between field crews, management, and government agencies to ensure complex projects are completed safely, on schedule, and within budget.
Key Responsibilities

  • Design, review, and implement temporary works and construction means and methods with a strong emphasis on safety
  • Inspect installed work, equipment, and materials; identify issues and coordinate corrective actions as needed
  • Provide on-site direction and technical support to foremen, crews, and subcontractors
  • Monitor project progress and prepare accurate daily reports, quantities, and documentation
  • Perform quality control inspections to ensure work complies with contract documents, plans, and specifications
  • Verify materials and workmanship meet project requirements and approved submittals
  • Enforce safety policies, OSHA regulations, and proper use of PPE on the job site
  • Support project cost tracking, schedule updates, and coordination with project stakeholders
  • Assist with communication between the field, project management, owners, and inspectors

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related engineering discipline
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Project Engineer, Field Engineer, or similar role in heavy civil or highway construction
  • Strong understanding of construction methods, equipment, and materials used in civil infrastructure projects
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations and job-site safety practices
  • High attention to detail with strong organizational skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work extended hours, including early mornings, nights, weekends, and occasional holidays, as required to meet project schedules

Working Conditions
  • This project is located in Albuquerque, NM. Subsequent projects will be nationally based.
  • Work is primarily performed on active construction job sites, including highways, roadways, and heavy civil infrastructure projects.
  • Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, wind, and dust.
  • Position requires walking, standing, climbing, bending, and lifting in a construction environment.
  • Frequent interaction with heavy equipment, moving machinery, traffic, and construction hazards; strict adherence to safety protocols is required.
  • Travel between job sites may be required depending on project location.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory at all job sites.
